With all other things being equal, would there be any difference in APD or other tariffs if I flew LHR-ATL or MAN-ATL?

No, they are both just over the 4001 mile threshold which places you in band C - £83 APD for the reduced rate or £166 standard.

Regardless of origin or destination, the mileage is measured from London to the capital city of the destination country, i.e. Washington, DC, in this case. The APD is the same whether flying from EDI to HNL or LON to BOS.

What is Air Passenger Duty (APD)?

I am amused in that case - I don't doubt you as I've read the site, I just think that HMRC really don't have a frickin' clue what they are talking about. I have a response from them on file (regarding a similar matter) stating that APD to NYC would be one band, and to LAX would be another, due to the greater distance.

Glad to see my taxes go to something competent...

OR, you could consider taking the train to somewhere with a lower tax. I priced leaving from LHR and DUB and the tax savings will pay for the train trip. Since I'm airline staff, I did NOT check the base airfare though.

If UK passenger count drops enough maybe they will reconsider the tax.

Yes that works, I do it often and I'm not non-revving.

I'll be trying a new way next; overnight ferry to the continent (Plymouth-Roscoff, £29) then fly out of Brest and transfer in CDG. Fares are cheaper that way, even including the BES-CDG flight cost, or I could take the TGV and save even more. Plus an overnight ferry is a much easier way to travel, considering I live 4 miles from the ferry port but 120 from the nearest decent airport and 230 miles from LHR.
