I am going to a family wedding in San Francisco in June and have just booked the flights yesterday. I was hoping to do a bit of spotting while I was there as it will make a change from the usual spotting locations of EDI, ABZ, GLA and LHR.
I was just wondering if anyone who lives in the area or has been has any advice on where to go to get good photographs of the aircraft and what the security at and around the airport is like?
I will be in SFO for a week so hopefully should find some time to go to a location near the airport at some stage but are there any good locations inside the terminals also.
I will be arriving on BA on the 5th June and leaving on AA on the 12th with a change in LAX. So are their any good spots when I arrive in SFO, in the domestic terminal where I will likely be departing on AA and if anyone knows of any good places to spot at LAX while I change between AA and BA that would also be very helpful.

Tons of good spots for arriving aircraft. Coyote Point is probably one of the best. Just north of that along airport blvd there is a few blocks of hotels and restaurants on the water with the same view of planes landing on the 28's with ample room to sit and watch and take photos. PM me if you need more details

I am sure mikeology can provide you valuable information as a local, but I want to mention one of my favorite spots as well. I have stayed at this hotel and the views of both the Bay and the airport are stunning. You don't have to stay here and can use their complimentary shuttle from SFO Airport which is just 2 miles away. Do enjoy a drink or something to eat in their lobby bar/restaurant because you'll not want to leave!
Go to the Embassy Suites San Francisco Waterfront, on Anza Blvd. in Burlingame. Just 2 miles south of the airport so depending on where you are staying you can use the BART rail to SFO ($8USD each way) and then take the free shuttle to the hotel. Tip the driver and stroll into the hotel and no one will ever question or guess you are not a guest.....and they'll welcome you with open arms at the bar after a day of spotting.

There's a great spot at the Marriott, just south of the airport. Awesome views of 28 arrivals, and you're still close enough to see departures from the 1s. Bring a light jacket because it can get chilly and windy. Enjoy!

Thank you for all the replies. They all seem like they will help me out. Will probably only get the chance to go along one day sso will have to make the most of it. Mikeology has certainly been helpful but I will also look into going down to this hotel and check it out. I am staying in the Marriott near Union Square and not far from two BART stations so looks like that will be my best bet. Should have booked a night at the airport Marriott though.
My layover in LAX is just under two hours. Not a lot of time but hopefully there will be some interesting aircraft there. Also I dont know how long the change between terminal 4 and terminal B will be. That may take up most of my time.

It's at least a good 10 minutes walk. I presume your luggage is checked through so exit T4 at the departure level and walk towards TBIT. Less pedestrian traffic.
