On my last spotting session at LAX I started to log aircraft registration numbers. I am thinking of doing it more consistently, so would like to know how you guys do it. For now I have the reg numbers in a small notebook, but I am thinking of buying the JP airline fleets book to mark the spotted regs. How do you guys keep track of spotted regs? Also, do you note other things, such as at which location the aircraft was spotted?

I have them roganized by date and location on the notes section of my iPad, then I make sure I keep a record of which CD-rom disk I burn them to there as well. Is pretty easy and, since I use my iPad most all the time, if I need it I can just whip it out and have all my info right there!

Only downside to this is that when you go on a long trip, it takes a long time to add the aircraft to the excel! On my RTW trip last year I spotted around 1500 regs. It took quite a while to add them all to the file!

I have a pretty elaborate database in Access. I keep the registration, date, airport, mode (Gate, Landing, Departing, etc), flight number and a comment if there is a special livery or something else notable. I only record an aircraft once per airport.
I also have a table of aircraft (downloading each airline from AirFleets.Net) and then use queries to find out how many aircraft of each airline, mode, or model that I have spotted (or even some combination thereof).
It is interesting to comb through the history and notice that I've spotted the same aircraft at different airports a few years apart, sometimes with different operators or even different registrations.

I buy a JP airline fleets book every other year and tick off the reg's seen. I have records going back to 1995 when I used to handwrite them out on A4 paper. I am recently going through the process of putting them into an excel spreadsheet - fascinating to look back on... and with the help of the internet ID bizjets etc I had no way of doing back then!
Now I keep a monthly log on my laptop as I visit YVR usually 4 times a week. I just log the new reg's or visitors of interest like Antonov's or foreign bizjets even if I have seen it before. I used to write everything in a notebook, and still do while flying and spotting through the window as I will then keep the whole log, but now at YVR I usually put them into the memo pad on my Blackberry (issues with being unable to read handwriting / losing a page / getting wet and washing off in the past!!) and can just delete them when checked off.
On an overseas trip or to an out of town airfield I tend to note everything seen, even if I have seen the reg before.
I have my log as follows:
Reg -> Type -> Airline / Operator (Base in brackets) -> Any name in bold and any comments such as UA Express c/s or special livery in italics or if its stored or all white etc - Im very pedantic about the details even though no one else sees it Eg
N650FE Airbus A300F-4-605R FedEx (Memphis, TN) MOLLY MICKLER
N869AS Bombardier CRJ-200ER SkyWest Airlines (St George, UT) Delta Connection c/s

Welcome to the registrations spotters club!
There are not so many here in the US that just log the registrations and not take pictures but I'm one of them. You can see me almost weekly at Imperial Hill at LAX but at different days each week.
I write the registrations down in a small notepad and then later transfer it to my JP book. The JP is really great and has a lot of info. The new one should be out in June or July so wait until then to get one.
In the notepad, I note the date and location.
I log registration numbers and don't keep track of frames seen. If the aircraft changes airline, I'll log it again even if there's a merger. (I will soon have to log all of US Airways aircraft when they are transferred to American....).
Set up your own criteria and make sure to use Flightradar 24 a lot which helps with the registrations of the aircraft that are too far away.
Perhaps we'll meet at LAX sometime?

Then i have the age of the aircraft when first seen
it looks like this

If anyone has any better way i would love to hear.
So far I have spotted about 716 different aircraft, i know its not much but its getting there

I have an access file, with a fairly simple log. I don't go spotting very often, but when I do I write down the regs in a notebook and put them in the file when I'm back home again.
I have the following information per aircraft:
Special livery (e.g. KLM Asia, retro, alliance), including the day I saw it wearing that scheme
Flown (whether I've been on the bird)
Comments (anything else I would like to say about the aircraft (e.g. KLM Cargo aircraft, but operated by Martinair), seasonal leases also go in this category)
one mile of road leads to nowhere, one mile of runway leads to anywhere

In 1973, I was introduced to spotting by a group from the UK while we were on the Pan Am rooftop at JFK. They showed me a copy of JP Airline Fleets. I went out and got mine the next week. In addition to spotting, I write the reg/ship number of a flight I'm taking on my boarding pass. I've been on ship 638 7 times!
