Greetings Airliners.net gang. I was doing some trip planning for next week and noticed an unusual seat map for DL617 SFO-NRT on Wednesday 4/10/13. The 40C 206Y configuration lead me to find this is a 767-400. I don't recall seeing this aircraft on this route before and it led me to several questions. First, is this plane capable of this mission fully loaded or will the weight and balance issues I've read about on this forum be an issue? Second, is this this airplane going over for some kind of mods or a heavy check? (It appears to continue on NRT- HKG as DL155) Finally, if seats were going to be blocked on SFO-NRT when would they do this? They all seem available/bookable at this time. Thank you in advance to anyone who might be able to address these questions.

You are correct about the seat config; however the seat map shows that there are two sets of lavatories at the front of the Business Elite cabin, whereas the B764 has the lavatories between the Business Elite and Economy Comfort cabins, and also the Business Elite cabin is not configured with flat bed seats. Thus it is a B763ER seat plan with too many BE seats!

Most likely heading over for some maintenance or mod work. A friend of mine managed to get the 767-400 on NRT-PDX last month as it was returning from getting some work done. He was planning on flying out via SFO to get it on the outbound but they pushed it back a bit so he went via JFK.

The seat map is screwy but a 764 is in fact scheduled for DL 2049 and DL 617 on 04/10. Can't see the ship # just yet but as deltaairlines said above, it's most likely going over for some MTC work.

What gets measured gets done.

I thought that was odd too. I looked at other 764 seat maps on delta.com and they show the lavs up front. Perhaps this one is going into the shop to put the lavs back behind BE.

Wifi perhaps?

Thank you for confirming that. Any thoughts on payload restrictions?

Tough to say; depends on payload and winds for that day. Sometimes, the 763 operating SFO-NRT has weight restrictions, so I would imagine that under the right circumstances, a 764 could also have weight restrictions.

763 is considerably longer ranged than 764, at least in terms of practical use. I don't know what manufacturer quotes are. 763 always does better than 764 on similar routes, though, with regard to likelihood of [not] being weight and/or balance critical.

I would expect the 767-400ER to have weight restrictions on SFO-NRT. The one good thing is that they are probably only selling it to the capacity of the 763 so the lighter payload would help.

If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!
