Me and a few friend are planning a trip to SXM in January from London and was wondering if anyone would have any suggestions as to the cheapest/best routings we can take...

I'd probably say AF LHR-CDG-SXM on the 320 and 343.

Lots of routes to look at.

BA/AA LHR-MIA-SXM 744 and 738

AA/AA LHR-MIA-SXM 777 and 738

KL LHR-AMS-SXM 737 and 744

US LHR-PHL-CLT-SXM 333 and 757 and 320

Just depends on how adventurous you want to be.

Without having looked at the schedules, is the PHL connection really necessary? Why not LHR-CLT-SXM? Like I said I haven't actually looked at their schedules, so for all I know maybe the timings don't work, but if they do I'd avoid the extra connection unless you really want to fly on a 757 or visit PHL or unless it's significantly cheaper.

Yep thats why I added it for some variation   But sometimes it doesnt connect so if they wanted a same day maybe LHR-PHL-SXM.

The shortest trip will be indeed with AF via Paris. If you want to fly on their high density aircrafts is another story though.
That said, you can also fly via AMS, I would be surprised if KL wouldn't have year round service from there.
Maybe other carriers fly from AMS (i.e. Arkefly) or Paris (Air Caraibes, Corsairfly), but then you will have to book your feeder to LON seperately

Since the options trough CDG and AMS are perfectly fine I would opt for one of those to avoid the hassle of transitting internationally through the US.

If it ain't Dutch, it ain't much.

I would try and get on a narrowbody for the SXM leg - then you are pretty much guaranteed to get some kind of view of the approach. Sure you can select seats in advance, but stuff happens....

In short: the cheapest will be UA, but you will need to transit in EWR and thus passing US immigration, which is hassle. Plus, it's a detour. May be an option though if you want to stopover in NYC a day or two...

Otherwise I would go for KLM outbound and AF inbound. It's only a bit more than with UA (some 70GBP or so). On the outbound I would rather go for KLM than AF, due to the fact that transit taxes in AMS are cheaper and the airport is easier to navigate through (although things changed in CDG, but still AMS is way better). But you may as well go for AF if schedules seem better to you, but try to get yourself at least 2 hours in CDG to be on the safe side. Some connections offer a bit more than 1 hour, which can be challenging.

On the way back I would however opt for AF over KL, as KLM's flight will usually have a stop in Curacao on the way, which will unnecessary lengthen your trip. I would personally book KL exactly because of that, but I am a geek

I like the idea of going via Curacao on the way back. Another option we had was British Airways to Antigua from LGW then LIAT to SXM, this was also the cheapest option! But then again, going on a B744 would trump a B772 any day of the week in my book

How about flying via Canada? Don't Air Canada fly A320s to SXM from YYZ year-round? Of course there are multiple daily flights from LHR to YYZ on AC so that wouldn't be a problem.

How about Air Transat? Do they fly to SXM?

Flights flown: 289 - Airlines: 41 - Airports: 66 - Next flights: RKV-AEY-RKV, KEF-EWR-MCO, SRQ-LGA, JFK-KEF

We did consider going via Toronto but it was ludicrously expensive...
