So over the summer I am planning on traveling to ITO because the girlfriends parents live down there. I am an airline employee and have looked on my airlines travel site along with ZED fare sites and researching my options on getting to ITO. Pretty much this is what I got so far, best options from what I see.

1.PHX-LAX-HNL-ITO
2.PHX-SLC-HNL-ITO
3.PHX-LAX-ITO

1. Delta: CR7, 763 or 753 HA: 717
2. Delta: CR9, 763 HA:717
3. Delta: CR7 UA: 738

Isn't the down season for Hawaii travel coming up so flights will be a little more open then they are now?
I have heard nothing but horror stories on nonrev travel in Hawaii, espically when it comes to leaving HNL. I was just wondering if any of the other airline employees or travel experts can shed some insight on what summer loads look like into ITO and what my best ZED options are..

Thanks..

May is usually not too bad if you aren't traveling around Memorial Day, however summer is peak season to Hawaii (even though you would think winter is, summer averages the highest loads). HNL is always a disaster to non-rev to. It's common to have 30+ non revs listed for flights to HNL.

ITO and KOA are much better. I would definitely try for ITO from LAX. The bad thing is that there aren't many options if you miss your flight, but the good thing is that few people want to go to ITO, so the non-rev list is shorter and the plane tends to not be as packed. You can always drive to KOA as well if things look bad at ITO.

Whatever you do, make sure you don't have to be at work the day you return so you have some options. 3 ZED fare tickets going via LAX and HNL will add up, so check to see what fare sales are out there since you may not save that much non-reving.

If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

If the price is right, and you have it, try HA flights back from/to the mainland. We aren't a 10k+ employee airline, so our non-rev lists from/to the islands are not 30+ (unless its LAS, then forget it  )

Typically you are right though. A DL pilot friend of mine showed one flight to me when he was here visiting...11:30p flight going eastbound had 107 standbys on it...107!!! (granted, it was the culmination of a cascading list from oversold flights all day long). He was 87th...needless to say, he stayed another night.

Thanks for the input guys! The trip is still a couple months off but I just wanted to look into it and see what the experts have to say on here.

What I was thinking and yes it will cost some was to nonrev out there since getting into Hawaii is easy and buy a postive space ticket on the way back but if there is some sort of magial way to nonrev out of HNL successfuly I would like to know about it!

How are typical US or HA flights to PHX out of HNL?

Hi dlramp4life. By your name, I think you work for DAL? If so, have you checked Comfirm for less? Thats not a bad way to go. PHX to LAX or SLC to HNL or OGG on confirm for less, and use a Zed fare to ITO on HA. Or Confirm for less from PHX to LAX to KOA and drive to Hilo. One more trick, is to bring your passport, and if you get stuck in HNL go to NRT and fly back thru Japan. It sounds crazy, but I know a few people that have done it to get out on HNL. Just some options.

Man...I've taken a few deviations here in there to get places, but not THAT kind of deviation

Funny huh, but I know quite a few people that did that to get home from HNL. I almost did that to get home after a furneral on a emergency pass from HNL to LAX.

+1

I've flown to HNL the past 3 years just before the heavy spring break season, which as a NR is never a good idea. The exception is if you're willing to spend some time to get home. (The standby list was over one hundred people for a flight to LAX this year, I was number 40ish, and the other mainland destinations weren't much better. The standby list to NRT was next to empty). Two times I flew HNL-NRT-Whatever US city I can get to-HOME. The other time I flew HNL-NGO-DTW-Home. Every time I've gotten a J seat through the entire itinerary, except within the US. Do your research, plan for the worst case scenario, and I'd highly recommend planning for a scenario that requires going to a Japan destination, even if you have to stay the night (which is a great adventure).. Remember, HNL-NRT/NGO/FUK/KIX
