Hey everyone...

I am planning to attend a friend's wedding in London, Ontario in October and I started shopping for flights but it proves to be more challenging than I thought... My flight will originate from the DC area...

Flying to Toronto is way too expensive... The closest alternative seems to be Buffalo but then I need to cross the border to Canada somehow... Does anyone have any idea how I could get to London, ON from BUF? Please keep in mind that I don't drive

Many thanks...

That's not easy... You could fo to Buffalo Bus Station and take a bus in direction of Toronto there, get off at Burlington, then a train to London from there.

Not sure if the US bound busses stop in Burlington though... You might need to go to Niagara Falls, ON, and take a bus from there.

Honestly, it might be easier and faster to fly to Detroit, go to Windsor, and take a direct train from there...

London is significantly closer to Detroit than Buffalo. Try to get a flight there...

Greyhound has 5 direct buses a day from Detroit to London. Travel time varies from about 2 hrs. 40 min. to 3 hrs. depending on the number of stops (a couple only make one stop at Windsor). Lowest online advance purchase fare for October is currently $17 one way.

Thanks for the Detroit advise... It sounds like a much better option...

This might be a dumb suggestion, since assumption is that you already thought about this if it was a possibility, but do you have any airline miles? I've noticed that for example UA miles will get you from US to Canada way cheaper than money. 25.000 miles for a roundtrip that might cost up to $600 in cash.

It's really wicked how disproportional these prices are. 10.000 miles + $5 will get you a one-way award ticket from DC to London, ON. The cash price is $256 for the same June dates I looked up. On the way back the tax is about $50.

Hi TurkishWings,

I don't know a lot about ground transportation to London, ON because I always fly to/from YXU. I can tell you about flights to here though. Sadly, the only airports from which you can get a direct flight to YXU are ORD, YYZ, or YOW. Well, that's with Star Alliance partners, not sure about others. I'm pretty sure WestJet only does domestic service to YXU from YYC, and YWG.

If you haven't booked your flight Europe - DC Area yet, you may also consider using an airline which can issue all legs in one ticket, and to book a stoover in DC area.
Could be a star alliance thing i,e,
IST-IAD (stopover)
IAD-YYZ-YXU (or similar)
YXU-YYZ-IST...

A possible idea if you fly to BUF is to take Amtrak's Maple Leaf from Buffalo/Depew station (only a 5-10 minute cab ride from BUF) to Aldershot (Burlington, ON; right outside of Hamilton) station and connect to VIA's Toronto-Windsor corridor service (which stops in London). You'd only have about 40 minutes to connect, though, and the train you'd be connecting to is the last one of the day (as the Maple Leaf service only runs once a day and arrives in Burlington after the other Corridors leave). Also worth noting is that you might have to book each leg separately, despite the fact that Amtrak and VIA jointly operate the Maple Leaf service.

Otherwise, it might be better to fly DL to DTW or UA via ORD.
