After reading the thread about the top 10 liveries of 2013, which is interesting to read everyone's reaction, what do we consider the BEST OF ALL TIME? Some of the best IMHO are the ones that are either airlines no longer with us or the ones that got painted over or the ones that have stood the test of time.

In my opinion Singapore and Alitalia are two that have really stood the time test. KLM and even LH have too. For me I keep two at the very top: PanAm's globe symbol is probably one of mankinds most powerful icons. Beautifully designed, just a globe yes, but the one and only globe. It's sky blue color, the interpretation of L&L lines and wind swept letter forms are forever. Even Marc Jacobs recreated a line of bags and luggage in homage. It transcends it's use as a company logo and entered culture and fashion. And, while a bit self serving as I work for LANDOR, the British Aiways LANDOR livery still ranks as the most classy and sleek livery ever. Copied many times but never beaten. And I will also say the skies are sadder without the Saul Bass' United livery. It was strategically perfect to match "the Friendly Skies" brand line. (yes, we all know they have a long way to go to earn that livery back). But think of the outrage over the death of the tulip...even for an airline with major reputation issues!

What are the top 10 ever? (for me)

1- PanAm
2- British Airways Landor livery
3....Over to you

The world is missing love, let's use our flights to spread it!

I am partial to this on, hence the name but I'm going Wisconsin Central, North Central and early Republic. "Herman" was one of the top most recognized liveries right behind PanAm. People still to this day still know the blue goose even though it was a mallard duck.

The right decision at the wrong time, is still a wrong decision. "Hal Carr"

TWA!..I liked the globe on the tail (1960's-1970's?) and I really liked the last one 2000's.

I always liked SQ 'Tropical Megatop' livery . Too bad it will always be associated with the crash.

I always liked the old Air California livery. So bright and sunny in all its cool 1970's hipness.

By whom? I liked the Negis one and its back in the current form, I think the best livery of all time was the previous KLM one.

+1 for PA. Two other timeless liveries are the current SQ and current EK ones.

Fully agree. I included that on the other livery thread as one of the best of all time. I like even better the original Air California livery with the black going over the flight deck.

BMI's last livery. It is such a perfect shade of blue yet it is so in a very sophisticated and elegant way. It just oozes classiness.

Second would be Air Tahiti Nui's livery and third would be Air New Zealand's 1980s/1990s livery.

Varig classic look, particularly the classic logo on the tail especially on the 707 and Ikarus on the cheat line near the front.

The current Vietnam Airlines livery is really nice, definitely one of my alltime favorites.
Air Tahiti's is great as well, definitely conveys a South Pacific vibe.
I think Royal Jordanian is very classy
AA's livery from the 60's with the lightning bolt cheatline was great
UA's Saul Bass livery is timeless - hoping for a retro jet from them painted up that way (a 787 maybe - how cool would that be?)
I'll toss another vote Pam Am's way - one of the most instantly recognizable and iconic logos/liveries ever

I am glad someone else said it before me.

Yes, Pan American is iconic ... but all in all, its a very uninspired paint scheme. The BOAC scheme pictured, (on I might add, the classiest looking jet ever built) will always be number one in my books.

These colors scream Florida, the airline's home base of it's network. Orange and grapefruit.

Great thread. My votes . . . .

1, Pan Am
2. Canadian Pacific
3. Braniff (Voting for originality here: because they were among the most daring, innovative . . . . added a lot of color when a lot of color was not to be had . . . .)

That one, particularly on a brand new DC-10. It shines in a very classy way for me, and not because it's from Canada. Doesn't look outdated at all to me.

United's Saul Bass livery is also amongst my favorite, especially the one with larger titles. It's by far UA's best ever livery so far.

I don't know where to find it, but there is a better version of the Royal Jordanian livery; The King's aircraft, a simpler version of the commercial one that says "The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan".

And if I can mention another noncommercial livery, the USAF Executive aircraft (the 707, 757, 747 and others) in the Air Force 1 Raymond Loewy livery.
