I need to go to Toronto for work later this year, and in searching flights I found a great money-saving combination (my company is pretty tight on travel budgets) that would invlove buying 2 tickets: Flying to IAD on DL, then taking Porter into YTZ. The connection times look really easy -- 2 hours at IAD on the outbound, about 3 hours on the return. The flights out of YTZ will require clearing US customs/FIS at IAD correct? 3 hours seems like more than enough time, but it would be arriving at 14:55, which seems like the time when inbound flights from Europe might be arriving.
Anybody have any wisdom to share? Is it just a bad idea to buy the split tickets at all? I'd love to give PD and YTZ a try--I've never logged either of them.

I can't say much about the wisdom of splitting tickets at IAD, but 2 hours outbound and 3 hours inbound sounds good to me, no problem at all if you don't have baggage and it should be fine even if you do. You're right about clearing customs at IAD, YTZ doesn't have any pre-clearance.
PD is a great airline though, good service and comfortable seating. YTZ is a pleasure to fly into as well.
