I'm about to pull the trigger, so to speak, and book tickets for a Dec/Jan vacation to Thailand! I'm booking a UA MileagePlus award ticket and wanted to get opinions as to what routing would be best. I really have three options:
1) Midwest-DEN-NRT-BKK all on UA metal. Highlight of this includes DEN-NRT on the 787.
2) Midwest-Europe(ZRH or BRU)-BKK. This routing would allow me to spend a large portion of the trip on Thai. Thai aircraft would be either A340-600 or 777-200. United to Europe would be either 767-300 or 767-400. How are these two aircraft?
3) Midwest-PVG/HKG/PEK-BKK. United to these Asian hubs, followed by a shorter flight on Thai. Either 747-400 or 777.
I'm flying in Y, and the connection times for all options are good. I will probably book two one-ways so that the ticket isn't considered RTW if I route through Europe (I plan on returning via NRT). I am UA Premier Gold/Star Alliance Gold, so I'm not sure what impact that has when flying Thai.
I've heard such great things about Thai, and would love to use them as much as possible, but it would also be awesome to get a chance to fly the 787. The other bonus with United is E+.

I booked a oneway USA to Thailand on United miles earlier this year. My exact routing was MIA-DUS-FRA-BKK-HKT with the first 2 segments on Lufthansa and the others on Thai.
FRA to BKK was on the A380 and their Y product was excellent. Bulkhead window seat on the upper deck, about as good as it gets in Y.
I'd highly recommend this! You can probably find routings like Midwest - USA Star Alliance Hub - FRA - BKK. If you can manage to make the transatlantic IAD-FRA, then you'll be on LH's 747-8. That would be a nice combo!

With the first option I would have to spend quite a few hours at HEL between the two flights,
-and flying on DC-10s only.
but the second option was straight through , with A310, DC-10 and A300.
Having spent the Christmas holidays in Norway, and this trip happening in late January, I was not too keen on crossing the Atlantic again two weeks later, followed by a 6+ hour wait at the airport in HEL, I decided to try something new and went for the second option.
I'm glad I did. The service on Thai was excellent -very friendly cabin crew, and so was the food.
Even though I was travelling on Y, I got a 3-seater by myself between SEA and NRT, so I could stretch out and get some sleep on the 10+ hour flight.
The A300 between NRT and BKK was a bit fuller, so I had to do with my single seat.
Leaving NRT after sun-down meant the whole leg to BKK would be in the dark, but we flew over the water anyway, so no great loss. A few minutes after crossing over the beach in the Da Nang-area, I coud notice the smell of charcoal in the airplane -and we were more than 35000' up!
On the way back two weeks later, the A300 got substituted with a B747, we flew up to Tokyo in daylight and I even observed snow on the mountains of Taiwan.
Mind you, this was a bit before IFE got common, so looking out the window was an option.
Seeing Mount Fuji on the approach to NRT was also memorable.
On the leg between NRT and SEA, I was back on a DC-10 again, got a 3-seater again, saw the coast of BC and Vancouver Island in the morning light before landing at SEA, transferring to the A310 that Thai Airways kept in North America and back home to Toronto, also in great weather that made the Cascades and Rocky Mountains stand out.
So, my advice is to go west -that's if you haven't moved to Germany yet as you profile says....

I do east coast BKK a few times per year. If it i a revenue ticket I go east coast (EWR or ORD or SFO or IAH) to NRT and then to BKK on UA. This is an early morning departure and close to midnight arrival in BKK.
If I am doing an award ticket I try to get more creative. I usually go through Europe ( generally FRA) on LH or UA and then always TG to BKK. I find TG great! I love their lounges and service. Routing through Europe is two nights of travel with an early morning arrival, but on the return it is a late night departure arriving back on the east coast on the same day. The departure from the east cost is late afternoon.
I am doing an Award ticket soon: JFK-ICN (OZ in F) then TG (C) to BKK. Return is BKK-NRT (TG in F), connecting NRT-ORD (NH in F) and then UA back to east coast.

Thanks for the recommendations, everyone. I ended up going with Midwest-DEN-NRT-BKK. I ended up choosing the routing since I really wanted to try the 787. Although United probably fails in comparison, I'm excited to be seated in 16L (even though I always choose aisle seats on long haul flights)! Had an option with Lufthansa been available that connected to Thai, I probably would have opted for that, though.
I was able to get creative on the return: Thai A380 to NRT, and an ANA 777 to IAD (still confused whether this will be an IOJ-configured 777 or not).
Thanks for again for all of the inputs! I'm really looking forward to my holiday to Thailand -- now I just need to figure out what parts of the country I want to visit
Other than Chiang Mai and the Northern areas, the midwest is nice and peaceful. I'd avoid the south personally, as it can be incredibly touristy, especially the Ko islands and Phuket. The island of Koh Kood just to the south east of Bangkok, is lovely though.

I think you made some good choices. I usually route through NRT as well. I hope the 787 is running and you don't get swapped out for a tech issue. A380 will be a nice ride for you too.
I'm not sure how long you are going for, but if you get the chance don't be afraid to try Phuket, Cambodia or my favorite Laos. Some great regional carriers like Bangkok Airways, Air Asia and Nok Air to try out while you are there.
