What does it take for an airline to issue a notice for political unrest and credible terrorism threats about to materialize so their passengers can get re-routed? I am furious at an airline b/c my family is supposed to come back home via the Middle East. Given the recent State Department travel advisory about a credible terrorism threat possibly being materialized in the next few weeks, I called the airline to get re-routed. They seemed absolutely clueless about the situation and even asked me: "There's threat?" What kind of airline is this? I just noticed some airlines putting notices for HI when the tropical storm came through couple days ago, wouldn't you think an airline would be better prepared than that? So now, I have either the choice of letting my family go through the Middle East or pay $300/ticket penalty + difference in fare to re-route them through Europe or Asia. Is there anything I can do, but wait?

If airports or passenger planes were the reported targets, then the airlines would be responding. Just because the State Department issues a travel advisory doesn't necessarily means that airlines will be doing anything in response to it. Airlines only issue notices for things that have the potential to disrupt their operations, like major storms, labor strikes, political unrest, etc. A threat to US embassies is not likely to impact airline operations. If airlines posted advisories for every country that currently has a State Department travel warning, the list would be quite lengthy considering there are 35 countries with warnings (and not all of them are served by US airlines or their partners).

If you're flying through the middle-east, there is a certain risk involved. It's YOUR responsibility to be aware of the risks. As another has posted, if the known risk involved the airport, you likely would have been advised by the carrier.
No reason to be "furious" with anyone though.
Why do we always expect "someone else" to take care of us? Life is a risk! Just manage it as best you can.
(I'm not flaming you, just saying that it's not the airlines' responsibility to notify you unless there is a known threat that would involve you or your families route.)
