So I'll have some time to check out the wonder that is the SIN airport. Your suggestions are most welcome. Time is not a limiting factor for me (flight arrives 6am, cannot check into downtown hotel until 2pm). What shall I see/do?

Quoting Boston (Reply 1): I suggest the rooftop pool. It has a Tiki bar and you're able to spot from up there. What's better than planes, beer, and a pool?
Isn't that airside? No problem if you have no checked bags (arrivals and departures are mixed), but if you have a checked bag, it'll probably be moved somewhere if you don't collect it.
Like the pool, most of the cool SIN activites are airside (e.g. cinema/pool). All the terminals (?) have landisde viewing areas, although at times, SIN is very quiet it this might get boring very quickly. T3 (and prob the other two terminals as well) have food courts in the basement.
There's enough stuff to do some an hour or two, but otherwise, i'd follow LAXintl's advice, and head into town, drop your bags at the hotel, and go and do something.

Go to the city. Plenty of more things to see, do and eat.
While a great facility, I've always found SIN to be kinda slow for plane spotting if that your goal. Seems the airport goes through a few hours of lots of activity, and then a few hours of near silence as mentioned by gabrielchew.
Anyhow, SIN kinda reminds me of a big shopping mall. I've never been for sitting around in a mall, so that is why I would also opt to go to the city and get a start on your visit.

Go into the city, and drop of your bags, then start exploring. Maybe you might even get lucky and get into your room early if you ask. SIN is great from a traveller's point of view, but still not that many places for spotting etc. (in the airport itself). It is in many ways like a shopping mall which happens to have flights departing from it. There are a tons of shops, restaurants, etc., both landside and airside (for example, both Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 have a supermarket in the landside basement), but really nothing you couldn't find in Singapore itself.
