Watching the PHL Livecam right now and I see that there is an AA 757 taxiing for departure and upon further investigation it appears a flight from SJU to JFK diverted to PHL. Anybody know why? The weather today in New York has been beautiful and if it was a medical diversion, wouldn't they just continue to JFK?

Any input is appreciated!  Smile

Wouldn't it depend on how serious?

When I was a kid, my family and I were flying to FLL (eventual destination was West Palm Beach via rental car), but we diverted to PBI (and ended up where we wanted to go, anyway) because a passenger suffered a heart attack.

It would, but the flightaware path shows that they took more time getting to PHL than they would have just continuing into JFK.

It could be mechanical and it could be medical. AA dispatch normally gives very little extra fuel. If they were given a normal afternoon hold into JFK for volume, the crew may not have had time to hold and diverted straight away to get more fuel in PHL.

It would make sense if that were the case. I flew into JFK yesterday and our hold was right near PHL so if they did the same for the Aa flight PHL would be a good diversion point.

Thanks!

It's pretty sad that PHL doesn't get a single AA 757 scheduled. I remember when all the MIA flights were 757's, when DC-10's flew to DFW and other locations and 727/707's were the norm. Now, an AA 757 is big news there? How boring our aviation has become!

Well, if it helps, it took off right in front of one of DL's three daily 757s to ATL and a US Airways 757 (which, provided the merger goes through, will be an AA 757)
