I'm nonreving back from EDI to LAX in October. I only pay taxes. What's the cheaper alternative, from LHR, CDG, or AMS? I'm DL, but am thinking VS nonstop to LAX. Thoughts and suggestions most appreciated.

It's going to be CDG or AMS. Taxes ex LHR are ridiculous.

Like Dan the MAN said..... Stay away from LHR....especially if you have J or F allowance.

Some times , its just as cheap to by a firm seat in Europe, rather than NRSA ex LHR...

Try DUB as well...?

DL employees do get upgrades to J. Are taxes higher for J than Y?

Higher...?
Bloody out of this world mate...
flights ex UK, especially Long haul are mental in J or F...and LHR even more.

Depends how your ticketing works....?

do you list for either cabin, then pay when its all travel has finished , thru payroll deduction...?

or do you always list for Y, and they just cabin roll you on board...?

Anyway, to avoid this ridiculous ex UK taxes, , get a single ticket to either DUB/CDG/AMS..

then book another to where you want to go...

if its all on one PNR, the EDI to XXX leg will throw up the crazy taxes.

Have fun

As said, UK taxes are obscene, and yes they do vary by cabin.

I imagine non-rev might be the same after all taxes are considered (check what you would be up to pay) but I never use FF points ex-UK because once the tax component (and fuel surcharge - would you be required to pay that?) is taken into account you can normally find a decent sale fare that is only tuppence more, and is a revenue ticket.

DUB would be a good option as said above, otherwise I would lean towards AMS.

OK, short haul on one PNR, long haul on another. Since I never check bags, no problem there.

OK, having never flown on an MD-11, that jumps to the front of the line. Does KL operate the MD-11 AMS-LAX? I'm not doing AMS/YUL/SFO.

Checking 'Airline Route Mapper', it seems they don't operate the MD-11 AMS-LAX, but they DO operate it AMS-SFO. Then it's an easy connect to LAX on DL. Thanks!!

sometimes..... usually on the 2nd dept of the day..(when that happens)

a great web page.. youll be able to check what aircraft flew what routes etc..

I flew the KL MD11 in june LAX-AMS but I know it was only for that month and hence the reason to fly AKL-LAX-AMS, SFO is an easy connect as you say - well worth it for a new aircraft to the logbook. I loved the flight, was so glad I made the effort.

The M11 is currently only scheduled to fly to YYZ and YUL I'm affraid to say. On the plus side you are pretty much guaranteed to get one on these routes. Well worth the detour!

Their rotations are also listed here; https://www.facebook.com/KLMMD11movements

Nothing's worse then flying the same registration twice, except flying it 4 times..

Does KL upgrade DL ZED riders? Does Delta reciprocate?

Delta does allow OAL NRSA to travel in J/F. I can't say with certainty that KL doesn't, but I know it isn't typically something other airlines tend to do. I flew AMS-YUL in 2010 just to get the MD-11 (as stated- well worth it!) and I was seated in Y+. It wasn't anything spectacular, but I guess still Y+ nontheless. Good luck and I hope you do get the MD-11 on your log. They really won't be around much longer I'm afraid.

RWY..KL does not upgrade DL employees. Not saying its never happened but generally no. ive been upgraded once on a intra Euro route. If you want to ride up front i would stick with DL.

And as far as i know..DL does not upgrade other airline staff either on INTL flights..not to say it hast happened

I have always found AMS to be the most reasonable as far as taxes for nonreving

If I recall correctly, the TAXES from LHR were nearly $100 for y class. First class is DOUBLE that!! The UK government is so smart that I avoid London altogether!!! I spend my money elsewhere.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just checked--the TAX is $172.50!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With some advance planning it would be cheaper to take the train to Dublin of Paris. If you're going to visit London, fine. But depart by another means!!!

This was for Y class. I priced Business class (we have a charge for upgrading to F or Bisiness) from LHR-EWR and it was something like $277, so maybe the tax is no longer double. In any case, I avoid departing from London.

Taking the train to Paris might be a bit easier, Dublin not so much.

The London-Paris train can be done for about 39 GBP or something, but you must book early to get that price. Might have to change stations in Paris, but that's not difficult. There is a train directly to the airport.

Check www.seat61.com for train info.

KLM does not upgrade any ZED riders including their own employees. DL does upgrade ZED tickets most
