I recently was chatting with a colleague about airports that we have passed through without ever visiting the city, and I thought it would make a fun question for this forum. For me, the list is fairly short, but I'd imagine that some of our day-trippers and mileage runners might have some fairly long lists. Here is mine:
So that makes 5 out of a total of 52 airports in my log. I'll give honorable mentions to two other cities that I have visited on road trips, and later connected through the airports, but still "never left the airport" on those flights. Those are DEN and YVR.

OGG (weird one...flew HNL-OGG-IAH-BNA instead of direct just to try a HA 717)
LAX (been to Orange Co but never LA proper)
PDX (then drove back through Portland on the same trip but never left the freeway so still never been)
EWR (been to NYC but never to Jersey)
I think that's all of them.
I also once did the opposite, flew MDW-DTW-BNA-MKL connecting through my own hometown of BNA with a 3 hr layover, so I scheduled my annual appt with my allergy specialist. Landed, rented a car, hustled across town for the appt, then straight back to the airport.

EWR (I've been to New York, but all my flights to EWR were just for connections)
IAD (Same as above -- I've been to Washington, DC on a road trip as a kid, but I've only connected through IAD)
LAX (Technically I left the airport, but only went as far In-N-Out Burger, then back to the airport to catch my connecting flight).
I would say that we keep it to cities that we have never actually visited--Since my original post I've thought of a few more that I could grant honorable mentions to, but I say let's keep it simple. Cities that you have never visited at any time via any airport or other transit method, but you have passed through the airport.

I don't find it weird at all. I'm flying YYZ-LGA-MSP-BZN soon (rather than the simpler YYZ-MSP-BZN) just to catch the WS 737-600. Remember your audience here.

Kansas City (MCI)
San Jose (SJC)
(The last 6 points above, all in Wisconsin except DLH, were intermediate stops on a 6-stop North Central Airlines Convair 580 from YWG to ORD sometime in the 1970s. I flew it nonrev once just for fun as it sounded interesting. A couple of the sectors were only 15 minutes or so.)
Sal Island, Cape Verde (SID)...when SAA used it as a fuel stop to/from JNB during the Apartheid era.
Adelaide (ADL)...intermediate stop on Ansett flight MEL-PER.
Rotorua, NZ (ROT)...intermediate stop on Fokker F27 AKL-CHC in mid-70s.

I used to construct great segment runs. Here are my cities:
Des Moines (ORD-DSM-DEN)
San Jose (do landside connections between terminals disqualify me?)

For me it would be mostly some of the major US hubs, as I connected to those several times but never visited the city. It would include:
(8 out 34 US airports)
In Europe, the list is shorter. I do have a lot of connecting flights in Europe, but I did visit the city of the airport one time or the other. The exceptions are:
- VCE (yeah, I actually connected to VCE!)
(5 out of 213 airports)
Only a small number of airports for me in Asia, 7. Of those 7 I only never left CGK. I connected to SIN another 3 times, but I did visit Singapore on an earlier occasion, so that doesn't count.

Very interesting indeed. More interesting is even the reason why people would do that (other than the "regular transit"). My list would be quite long with airports people would not expect transit trough, that was from the time I did a lot of daytrips, same day return on the same aircraft and mileage runs:
LWO (actually never left the plane, it was a stop)
LPA (flew there with DE in order to fly back with IB 340 to MAD, another time with DE to fly back on a DE 767)
PMI (uncountable times with AB in transit)
ZRH (either in transit with LX or not countable times I flew between FRA and ZRH with AB in one day as a mileage run)
FRA (see ZRH)
STN (in transit with AB to BHD, when they used ot have a mini hup there, another time connecting with FR from TLN to HHN)
LHR (twice overnight, once with BA arriving the evning before from CDG connecting to IST, and once arriving with BA from FRA and connecting with LO to WAW, overnight as well, also in transit on a ame flight return at T4 with AF on the A380)
BTS (connecting overnight with defunct Sky Europe from CGN to ORY)
ALC (connecting from FRA with AB to PMI with UX)
BCN (connecting from AB from PMI to Clickair to GVA, as well as with LX from BSL to LH to FRA)
PRG (connecting from F7 from GVA to U2 to MXP as well as with OK from FRA to TLV)
MAD (quite a few times: From PMI with HG to FRA with LA, as well as with JK from BCN to FRA with LH)
VIE (with HG, OS, LH)
FCO (either with HG or quite a few times with AZ)
TXL (with AB)
AYT (with PC from ECN connecting to X3 to FRA, as well as a few other flights, including a transfer by night between both terminals by foot)
RIX (with FR from HHN to BT to Liepaja, but also a few other BT transfers)
URE (same plane turnaround with Avies from TLL)
BRI (same plane turnaround with X3 from MUC)
TLL (transfer from HAJ to TBS with OV as well with Avies to URE)
SZZ, WAW, WRO(connecting with LOT)
NAP (connecting with Intersky from FDH to Skyeurope to BTS)
STR (same flight connecting from/to VIE on HG on a mileage run as well as DUS-TXL)
BGY (interestingly connecting from AB to AB i.e. from DUS to TXL)
OLB (same flight connections with AB and X3)
SHA (well I visited the old airport hotel in the airport, but that's it about the city, was on a overnight transfer arriving from MU from PEK connecting to Shenzhen)
CDG (connecting from JFK to PAR on AF, and once on a hub visit by AF)
AMS (hub visit by KLM, we basically flew there to visit the airport)
SAW (overnight transfer, arriving with Izair from ESB connecting to X3 to FRA)
BDS (just flew there with X3 from FMM and back)
BEG (transiting with JAT to/from SJJ, on the way out I still got to a landside restaurant in a little town next to the airport)
FAO (flew there with HG and back on the same plane (to and from PMI) )
ZAG (connected with OU from DBV to Pula)
ZAD (just a stop, did not even left the plane)
ESB (connecting on Anadolujet from Van to SAW)
SIN (stop with LH on the FRA-CGK flight, as well as from LH from CGK to LH to MUC)
CGK (connecting from Jambi on Batavia to DPS on Lion Air)
JMB (connecting from Batam on Kartika Airways to CGK on Batavia, I left the airport though and walked a few meters down the road to a restaurant)
MUC (connecting with LH from SIN to FRA)
BSL (stop with a plane from now defunct Sky Airways from AYT to FRA)
EWR (in transit from CO from BTV to DL to ATL)
ATL (in transit with DL from EWR to RDU)
BWI (in transit with WN from RDU to EWR)
IAH (in transit from LH from FRA to UA to TPA, but also once with UA from EWR to PTY on UA, but I actually spent the night in an airport hotel next to the freeway, if that counts)
PTY (connecting from IAH with UA to CM to BOG)
BGA (in transit with Avies from BOG to CUC, ate breakfast in a restaurant in front of the airport)
CUC (in transit with Avies from BGA to BOG)
MXP (in transit between AZ from FCO and LH to FRA, as well as SV from JED to LH to FRA)
KIX (flew there and back on the same AZ plane from FCO, had a nice meal)
KWI (connecting from MS from CAI to SV to JED)
JED (7 hours layover with SV from KWI to MXP)
LYS (connecting on AF from STR to FCO)
YOW (on AC from FRA to YYZ)

For me, it's not many.
AMA (didn't leave the plane)
ECP (didn't leave the plane)
ANF (didn't leave the plane)
CDG (entered France to mail a letter, though I was transferring from a non-Schengen flight to a non-Schengen flight)
Airports I've flown through and visited by car or otherwise
DFW (all my O&D trips to Dallas have been to DAL)
IAH (all my O&D trips to Houston have been to HOU)

Lots of airports that I've connected in but never flown O&D, but most of them are in cities that I've visited on other occasions by road. The only two places I've connected and never otherwise visited are NRT (at which I have connected three times) and MEL (once).

WOW, maybe I've been lucky in the ability to schedule direct flights, but there are only two airports I've transited thru, though without actually leaving the airport to spend time in that city, both on many occasions.

For me it would be:
ATL-2x connected to MKE and BDL
STL-1x connected to MCO
DTW-7x Connections to/from MSP, BDL, MKE, LSE
BWI-1x Connected to MDW
CVG-1x Connected to GRR
I'm kind of surprised my list isn't longer. I had a connection in LAX that ended up being a visit thanks to a missed connection to SYD. I guess MIA could also be on the list as I've only been there for a connection, but ended up visiting via FLL. The DC airports are both also connections but I have visited the city.
Very interesting topic!

DFW (unless you count a night for a mattress run at the Hyatt right at the airport on property)
RIC (unless you count driving through it)
OKC (another drive through but no stops)
RNO (another drive through)

Just a handful.
A little sidetrack but still keeping to the theme of staying on airside:
Who have transited their home airport* before? Meaning you have flown into your base city but continued onto another destination without getting out of the airport.
I have on an occasion flew JKT-SIN but did a last min transit on to KUL. As was often the case, traveled with only hand-carry and bought the SIN-KUL ticket on arrival at the transit counter, so did not go through Immigration.

Airports visited without visiting the main city they serve:
LHR (to be remedied in November)
PHL (may well be worth visiting)
DTW (no thanks)
MKE (only on the aircraft, no deboarding)
DEC (only on the aircraft, no deboarding)
All in the US except London Heathrow--to be remedied soon anyway.
This caught my eye because I live in BZN -- it's not a place that sees many connections. What's the story? Was it an intermediate stop on a direct flight/milk-run? There used to be some of those through here, and fairly recently with AS/QX.
Similarly, I drive through the IDA area all the time and have family nearby, and it's a sleepy little airport that doesn't seem like a likely connection point. Did you maybe stop in on one of QX's triangle routes?

I have a couple obvious ones and a few that I'm not quite sure about.
Definitely just transited:
GRR (I did visit the city later via Amtrak and car)
AUS (Been via road trip - there in transit overnight at a hotel and back on AA early in the morning)
RNO - Only took a short walk out of the terminal into a nearby neighborhood, then aboard AA to Chicago.
LAX (x7?) Once I left and visited the In-n-out, all other times in transit!
IAD - though I have visited DC via DCA and BWI
PVD - caught a ferry to MVY nearby but never been to the city proper.
ELP - I spent three weeks here working TDY for MQ, but I never really left the airport. I stayed at a hotel across the parking lot from the terminal. One night me and a couple other guys went out to a movie on the West side of town. I'm not sure that counts really as a visit to El Paso. It's a fantastic medium-sized airport, and the people there were awesome to stay with for so long!
