Biman DC-10 Special Flight: Mark Your Calendars

Hello everyone,

since the first two threads have been archived:
Chance to fly BG DC-10 on Special flight! (by delta777jet Oct 22 2013 in Aviation Polls)
Fly BG DC-10 On Special Flight! Part 2 *Update* (by delta777jet Nov 28 2013 in Aviation Polls)
I thought it could help to start a new one since apparently, bookings will be possible from this Friday:

Quote:
Scenic tour Tickets for the last passenger flight will only be sold via our official partner in this endeavor - Ian Allan Travel whose website is at www.ianallantravel.com. This website will be updated in early January 2014 with all the details on the flight times and how to book, etc. In addition, Biman Bangladesh Airlines will be offering scenic flights from Birmingham and will be providing details on how to book directly via our website on January 10th. So do not buy tickets elsewhere, we want these tickets to go to genuine aviation enthusiasts.

I don't remember reading anything on the date, so I apologise in case this is just a repeat of old information. (source)

That's it for the moment, fingers crossed!

Cheers,
aloges

I heard they won't be selling middle seats (at least on the sightseeing flights from BHX), only the pairs on the outside (2-5-2) which means about 130, 140 seats per flight. I heard £200 for a window and £150 for an aisle on the sightseeing flights.

Personally I think they should sell the lot, why not? Monarch are selling all of them on the A300 farewell flight LGW-BHX.

How many of you lunatics are keen on the DAC-DXB-BHX flight? Or just the BHX-BHX?

Oh and as previously suspected, definitely no pax on the flight to Seattle, which will tech stop at JFK.

Finally, the current edition of Aviation News has a three page article on the history of the DC-10 in Biman service, on sale til the end of the week. Cover is the mighty B-52.

No Ian Allan will have a list of instruction on how to book it. There must be a reference code or something like that. You book the sightseeing flight on Biman site.

Latest info:

DAC-KWI-BHX
Feb 20; all seats will be on sale (Y314); £600 window, £500 the rest

sightseeing flights
Feb 22, 23, 24; only window and outboard aisle seats on sale (approx 120 seats, it's a 2-5-2 config); flights will operate 0900, 1200, 1500. First flight to go on sale will be Feb 24 0900 flight, when it's full the 1200 flight goes on sale, when it's full 1500 flight goes on sale, THEN the day before opens up (Feb 23) 0900, then 1200 et al. £150 window, £100 the rest. Ian Allen will sell seats on "the last flight" but I am curious when that will be, probably the 1500 on Feb 24, for £200 window and £150 the rest. All the other flights and the DAC-KWI-BHX will be sold direct by Biman.

For me, availability wise and cost wise, the flight from DAC is a non starter.

Also, the 24th would mean taking time off work, (unpaid).

So I will try to work a seat on one of the weekend trips.

That is my plan as well. It seems like they're limiting their potential customers by only offering Monday flights for sale; I would think that Saturday or Sunday flights are far more desirable.

To be fair, it's amazing that this is happening in the first place - I don't see it as much of a customer-airline issue, but rather as a bit of a favour.

I guess they have a good reason for this, maybe crew or tax issues or whatever. We're hardly in a position to demand otherwise, let's just be thankful for the opportunity and take a day off work!

Hold off booking days off work for the Monday sightseeing flights until they go on sale - I don't know and am hesitant to bug BG Towers for tiny clarifications because all will be revealed anyway (did I say that already?) - but I am sure that there will be a flight available on the Sunday right from the start. Looks like Monday will be the very last ever flight so that obviously has a historical appeal, but those who can't get time off, or don't want to burn holiday time if they don't need to, will be fine I think. Let's see what goes on sale - which will be tomorrow (Fri) or early next week (at the latest).

Looks like this will be the ultimate a.net meet ever.

Ian Allen are now sending out booking forms by email to people who previously registered interest with them for the last-last flight, at 1500 on Monday Feb 24. To book you have to get a booking form, print it, fill it in by hand, scan it, and email it back. This is a painful process (I don't have a printer and scanner at home anyway) and another reason I am not a fan of Ian Allen. Plus some people who did register with them haven't been sent the form in the first place, so one wonders why bother register in the first place. Window seats are £200, aisle seats are £150 if you can book.

The rest of the flights BHX-BHX will go on sale any day now on Biman's website for £150 window, £100 aisle - look out for it. But now we know - the Ian Allen flight is the 1500 rotation on the Monday and everything before it will be regular Biman (and if it's on their website, it'll be a straightforward online booking hopefully).

The DAC-BHX prices are a bit higher than I would have liked, but I wonder how many people will actually go for it and whether it is worth purchasing an aisle seat to save GBP100. It could be a pretty small group which is also appealing.

I will definitely do the flight up from Dhaka to Brum but that will probably do me, although once the pleasure flights go on sale on Tuesday I will look at the weekend ops which are £50 cheaper than the Ian Allen. BG are prepared to operate up to nine flights (inc the Ian Allen one) - will be curious to see if they sell them all out. It's only 130-odd seats per flight, so we're talking about 1,000 seats. Are there 1,000 DC-10 nuts in the world?

Has it been a hiccup by the Biman Res' system to put these days up for sale early on the 14th of January ?
I had the understanding that first all flights on the 24th were supposed to sell out before flights on the 22nd or 23rd would go on sale.

As per the updated news page:

Quote:
But this is not its final operation. Due to an overwhelming response from aviation enthusiasts from around the world, we are going to operate scenic flights on the weekend of Feb 22, 23 and 24 from Birmingham airport. The first flights to go on sale will operate on the Monday, Feb 24th at 0900, 1200 and 1500 with a block time of an estimated one-hour. If as expected, they sell out quickly we open up the Sunday, Feb 23rd flights up for the same times of 0900, 1200 and 1500. As these sell out then we will open up the Saturday flights also at the same times – 0900, 1200 and 1500. As with the last commercial flight from Dhaka, we are keeping the prices for these scenic flights at reasonable levels with prices of ₤150 for a window seat and ₤100 for an aisle seat. Please note that for the last commercial flight ever on Monday Feb 24 @ 1500, prices have been set slightly higher at ₤200/₤150. In order to keep the flights as “special” as possible we are only selling 152 of the 319 seats on the aircraft – therefore all are window or aisle seats.

Seems that 22/23 being open was a mistake after all.

Long, long, long time listener. First time caller.

There's several of us here in GVA that booked for the weekend this morning and all have confirmation emails. This discussion is making us VERY nervous ... Didn't plan on taking Monday off. Plan is spotting at LHR Friday, BHX for a DC-10 flight Saturday, and museums and LGW then fly out Sunday night.

If anyone manages to contact Biman etc and get an answer whether or not the weekend bookings are good please shout!!

At 7:30CET you could, right now you can't. We don't know if that's because they're actually sold out (unlikely but possible? Everyone wanted to get in on the weekend?) or because the fact they went on sale in the first place is a mistake. I know several people who have "confirmed" tickets bought this morning for the 22/23rd but we're waiting for a possible "oops" email.

I think it's best to just sit tight and wait for more info.

Now I am sat here with two (sure.. already paid) seats on a monday flight two people can't use, because they have to work...  gasp

Don't fret, the weekend flights are not sold out, they will become available as soon as the Monday flights sell out. I don't know why it's being done this way but next to go on sale is Sunday, then Saturday, and if demand exists, Biman are willing to fly on Friday as well. All that is from Biman HQ direct. Reason is cos the DC-10 is such a thirsty bird (47% higher fuel consumption than the 777-300ER per seat) that they can't afford to operate nine half empty flights, each one has to be full to pay it's way. I guess this is the most logical way of doing it. Anyway, hang in there and the weekend flights will open up quite soon. See you onboard!

Also they will be bringing DC-10 and F-28 stuff up with the aircraft to sell over the weekend, eg parts, instruments, manuals, weight and balance paperwork, safety cards (of course!), you name it...

Here's what you're all forgetting:

Biman flights are usually about 20-22 hours delayed, so a Saturday booking is actually a Sunday flight.

I'm ticketed for BG 1015 from Dhaka. Also snagging an A342 and A310 on the way there. Booking went smoothly, but the Biman website is kind of second-rate. Seat selection is a "coming soon" feature, and you first have to make a reservation, then get until midnight Bangladesh time to pay for it, which takes you through a third-party bank to process the credit card. Odd, but it does work.

See you all in DAC / BHX.

Some spectacular lack of English comprehension going on here. Other than a brief hiccup when the flights went on sale, Biman are releasing seats as each day fills up, working in reverse chronological order from Monday Feb 24. This has been repeated again and again. Now that Monday Feb 24 is almost sold out, flights from Sunday Feb 23 are on sale. As they fill up, expect to see Saturday Feb 22 go on sale.

Quoting bennett123 (Reply 46):

This discussion is making us VERY nervous

Why? Please read it more carefully.

BG HQ are very responsive to emails. If you are unhappy with your booking, contact the airline and they will fix the issue.

Quoting HAMSpotter (Reply 34):
I booked (and paid) two window seats for Saturday and then during the booking for the second pair of aisle tickets they closed the Saturday flights and I received a booking confirmation for two aisle seats on the monday 12pm flight!

If you do not get a response, let me know by private message and I will contact the office of BG's management and get this situation fixed.

To recap. Monday almost sold out, Sunday now on sale. If Saturday is your preference, hang in there a tiny bit longer and it will go on sale. If demand persists, the airline is willing to fly Friday as well. Everyone will get their DC-10 wishes granted.

And some spectacular condescension.

I fully understand the situation. The fact remains I hold a ticket for a flight that is not yet on-sale (because it was sold by accident) and not guaranteed to fly. I've tried to clarify this with Biman but have yet to receive a response. I realize exactly what went wrong. The truth is what they said would happen, and what happened, was not the same thing albeit for a brief moment.

As for your predictions for the future: I'm confident Sunday will eventually sell as well but I can't make other travel arrangements until I know which day I'm flying. I think my nervousness is perfectly justified and don't see a need for any remedial English lessons.

Quoting cedarjet (Reply 49):

They haven't been with me. I contacted the "sales" and "Ticketing and Reservations" emails listed on their web site. If you'd like to suggest an address that gets a quicker response I'd be grateful.

Saturday remains a question mark - hopefully there's plenty of enthusiasts that were just waiting for the weekend to go on sale and the process will repeat itself. I'm just sitting on a great deal GVA-LHR and hoping things clarify before that sale expires.

Glad you're all sorted! Maybe see you there.

Just booked window on the 12:00 flight.

Really looking forward to this travel back in time! The colorful seat patterns and inside walls - everything will remind me of my first flights as a child in the 80s. Fantastic and priceless experience.

Hi All

I booked the 12:00 p.m. Saturday flight and the 3:00 p.m. Sunday flight first thing yesterday morning. I have email confirmation and my E-Tickets. I too found the wording on the website rather odd, but as soon as I had booked the second flight it appeared that all weekend tickets had sold out.

As I have my paid-for and confirmed reservation and E Ticket for both, I'm still somewhat disconcerted to read here that the Saturday flights haven't even been opened! Your (hopefully reassuring) comments are welcome!

Regards

Richard

This should be interesting...

I have a confirmed window seat e-ticket for the 3:00 p.m. flight (BG8) on Monday the 24th!

This will be a one-day operation where everything must go as planned. I will be flying GOT-CPH on SK433, then CPH-BHX on SK2533 for a scheduled arrival time in Birmingham at 09:25. After the Biman flight I will be flying out of BHX for CPH at 19:10 on SK2536 and then CPH-GOT on SK448.

There is still a few things I need to sort out to make sure I can get out of work that day, but the chance to fly on the DC-10 (never done that before) is something I do not want to miss out on.

Arrive LHR Friday morning (SN via BRU), with hopefully some good spotting weather, and will most likely head to BHX in the evening. Back to London after the noon flight for an evening on the town and a Sunday market stroll. Flying out of LGW Sunday night (U2).

If there's a thirsty group in / around BHX Friday night, might be fun to have a pint.

I noted what one Flyertalker said:

Just a warning, Biman is a terrible airline. Don't take them for a long haul, the CGP-DAC run isn't too bad, but expect terrible delays and bad service (though on a short flight the service doesn't matter). However, trying a DC10 would be interesting!

There will have to be enough for the number of passengers on board or they will not be able to do the flights.

That is for every flight including all scenic flights. They will need to have the safety cards for as long as they fly the aircraft. The very last flight is a different story. I suppose the flight after the Monday BG8 will be a ferry flight to some aviation museum with only a few people and guests on board.

Therefore it wouldn't be wise to take out safety cards until the very last scenic flight - maybe.
This is a Bangladesh airline so maybe their policy is uptight.

Thanks for the detailed description. I am sure you are right.
However, the intention of my comment was nothing more than to add some humor.
I am not a collector of saftey-cards - I am collecting memories. And furthermore, I am booked on Monday myself...

Good. We can organize a meet-up at the airport before we go on our respective flights.

I just hope the Biman flyer will make it to Birmingham and it can take us around for our joy rides!!!!

There is too little advance notice for designing and printing a T shirt this time around. Also I am doing this as a day trip 5.30 AM to midnight with all the different flights and trains so it won't be easy.

Will see what else I can think of.

And Madame, I have long been a fan of your style and your politics but I must argue with this:

Whoever said it (I know it's from FlyerTalk, not you) isn't worth quoting and are showing their ignorance; I have flown Biman at least twenty times in the last two years (mostly DC-10, but also 737-800, F-28 and A310) around Asia and the Persian Gulf and every flight has been on time, it's not the 1980s anymore but people love negative stereotypes even if they bear no relation to reality.

In addition, the cabin crew have been incredibly friendly and welcoming every single time, always a smile and a kind word, and you can't walk past a galley without someone offering you a cup of tea. If only airlines in the west had the same punctuality and service ethic.

So please forget the old cliches about Biman, yes we all remember seeing a DC-10 in the corner of the airport with the engine covers off and the top line on the Flight Information Screen showing yesterday's BG flight not yet departed - but seriously, that was twenty years ago.

No it wasn't. In 2012 my AUH-DAC on DC-10 S2-ACO was more than 10 hours late. In the week after there was some severe chaos as well, with some flights being late for around 24 hours.

Right now the operation seems to be very stable with almost no delays, though.

I don't know Birmingham airport (yet).

Is it easy to watch tarmac operations, take offs and landings from inside the terminal?

Can we easily swap gates going from one to another with our BG boarding passes? I suppose it will all be the same gate for all the scenic tour flights. Does the Flybe lounge have runway/apron views?

I will be getting in early enough to be able to watch a couple of other scenic flights take-offs and landings before the final scenic flight on the Monday afternoon.

Would allow me some pictures.

Any comments or advice on this will be appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.

Me too. Very good question.
It would be nice and helpful to get some advice from the local aviation enthusiasts in this forum.

The only info from the official airport website is this:
http://www.birminghamairport.co.uk/u...lities2/aircraft-viewing-area.aspx
As far as I understand it, the area is located outdoors "only".
Per google maps / street view I would say it's on the southerly end of the runway.

As a BHX local, there are very limited photo opportunities within the terminal. A free bus to Long Stay Car Park 1 is your best bet, get off in the "D" zone of the car park and this will give you reasonable views over the apron and runway. For the more adventurous, get on the bus towards Birmingham (service # 900) - they run every 20 minutes and get off opposite the Holiday Inn at the Cargo Terminal. Journey time is about 10 minutes, fare £1.80. Head into the Cargo Terminal area, towards the far end is a NCP multi storey car park. The top floor gives good views of the terminal / runway, especially after midday and probably the best bet for photography. This is where I intend to do my photography over that weekend.
There is a good website at: www.flyintobhx.co.uk which you may find helpful.

A couple of quick questions.

The viewing area seems to be landings only, is this correct?.

How do NCP feel about spotters.

Are there any good spots on the Elmdon side, as lighting could be an issue, especially later in the day.

Thanks for the heads up.

NCP don't appear to be bothered by spotters, until the runway extension works started, the official viewing area was in the Long Stay car park. Light is an issue for landing shots on 33, but not for taxiing shots on the apron. Here, the issue is the height of the security fence. There are higher parts of the car park were shots over the fence may be possible without steps, but you will need a lens in the region of 300mm. The Elmdon side is referred to in my previous post (cargo terminal). If you refer to the website I mentioned previously, some of the photos are taken from Long Stay 1.

With a single runway in operation direction of operations depend on winds.

Dedicated area with park benches available there which is frequented by locals and visiting spotters; can be reached on foot from the terminal within minutes - no need to use / wait for shuttle bus if the weather is fine.

Re: Novotel & Travelodge at BHX. The Novotel is in the Terminal area and has no views over the apron or runway. The Travelodge is on the Cargo Terminal side next to the new Control Tower, 50% of the rooms have views over the airport. I have stayed in the Travelodge, if you check in reasonably early or contact the hotel beforehand, explain that you are an aviation enthusiast, they will accommodate you in an airport view room if they can.

Hope this helps.

Re: Novotel & Travelodge at BHX.

I found this.

Travelodge Birmingham Airport Hotel is located overlooking the Cargo/Exec Terminal on Terminal Road just off theA45. Short taxi ride from the airport and NEC. WIFI in rooms at a charge.Breakfast and evening meals, bar available at hotel other than that short drive or taxi ride to Solihull for more variety. Long stay parking at £7.50per 24hrs.

http://www.plane-spotting-hotels.com...dex.php/plane-spotting-birmingham/

I hope someone will catch pictures of the landing of the very last scenic flight.

Quoting MadameConcorde (Reply 108):

It will be dependant on the runway in use at the time. Runway 33 approach is nearer the hotel, best bet is the NCP car park in the Cargo Terminal area which I referred to in post # 90 which is a short walk from the Travelodge. The light is best from this side of the airport in the afternoon.

Thank you.

Many of us will be taking part in this adventure inside and out so we will all be able to share our pictures and comments. We will also have those from the FT crowd.

The more, the merrier!

Hello All,

Would anyone be interested in a possible Estonian Air EMB-170 flight from BFS - BHX on the 23rd FEB Leaving Belfast at 2000 Local???? Ticket prices would start around GBP 49.00 per person.

I would have been had I not already made my travel arrangements. Seems like a good opportunity to fly on a different airline.

Will this aircraft be making a night stop at BHX on the 23rd do you know? Would be nice to get a photo of that scheme.

Yes quite possibly, if I can get to BFS on flights which tie up.

I see two easyJet flights BHX-BFS for 55ish on sunday. The 18-19.05 is a bit too tight to mention.
Maybe nice, maybe a bit of hassle, might be nicer to try them on a longer and hardly more expensive flight to eastern Europe instead.

I was all up for the DAC-BHX flight, but am having to restrain myself due to other flying priorities this year - particularly filling the blanks in my log such as the HS748, YAK-40, YAK-42, etc. I've flown the BG DC-10 a few times though so have not missed out on it.

Are the remaining seats on the DAC-BHX flight going to be on public sale as well?

Non-member Martin W asked me to post that he will be on the BG4 at 1200 on Saturday, so he can be added to the list.

Well this potentially takes the shine off the celebrations of the weekend.

It shouldn't make much difference. For sure this DC-10 won't see any other revenu flight, either passengers or cargo, after this weekend. It might end up in the dessert or flown to another museum or only the cockpit might remain somewhere as a movie prop. But anyway it wouldn't be the last DC-10 flight, with FedEx and the USAF continuing to operate theirs for years to come.

Do I understand that Biman would rather sell the aircraft to a breakers yard at metal cost rather than donating her to the Seattle Museum of Flight??

This would be a real shame!

Whilst it will not make any difference to the events of the weekend, it is regrettable that the possibility of preserving a complete DC 10 now appears in doubt. The fact that the aircraft in question is the penultimate airframe produced is also quite significant.

The information in the article appears to suggest that it is more a case of, "No room at the inn," than a lack of interest on Biman's part. They still appear to be keen to see it preserved, but the Museum of Flight seem not to have enough room for the aircraft.

From a purely personal point of view, I find it sad that the opportunity to preserve the aircraft now appears likely to have to end at a breakers yard. Hopefully a favourable solution will be found before the CofA expires in May.

If it does go to the breakers yard, is it more likely to be in UK, (such as Kemble) or a yard in the USA.

If it is in the UK, there are more likely to be pictures as Kemble is more accessible.

Mine was a German Visa card with "Verified by Visa" enabled. Perhaps that's the sort of thing you need to activate in case you don't already use it.

I think it comes down to whether MasterCard 'Secure Code' or 'Verified by Visa' is enabled on the card you're using, as my MasterCard was rejected because my card issuer didn't take part in 'Secure Code,' yet my Visa Debit card which is enrolled in 'Verified by Visa' worked fine.

Late to the thread, but I've been booked for a few weeks... BG2 on 23rd Feb!

Apparently each passenger will be given a certificate signed by the Captain, there will be commemorative caps and T-shirts on sale at the airport, plus other memorabilia. There will also apparently be 'enough safety cards' in case anyone is concerned about that!

When this thread started, I recall the panic to get a seat.

Currently, there are seats available on all flights, (window and isle) on the 22nd, window and isle on BG2 on the 23rd, and isle on BG4 and BG8, on the 24th there are only isle seats on BG2.

Hopefully they will run all of these flights.

Based on sales to date, they may want to merge some flights.

There are also still seats on the flight from Dhaka.

I am also aware that the planned destination in the US fell through.

Any thoughts.

This is my concern as well that low ticket sales will cause them to cancel/merge flights, particularly on Saturday when I am booked (BG4). Having booked advance train tickets from the big smoke I wouldn’t be happy if they turn around and say you’ve been rebooked on another flight! The BG4 seems to be the most popular over the weekend but I wouldn’t be surprised if the 09:00 departure on Saturday is canned. Hopefully not but will they pick up too many more bookings now? Those who really wanted to go would have booked Monday/Sunday when they went on sale (see above), the stragglers like me would have booked Saturday/Sunday already, so apart from a trickle of last minute bookings how are the seats going to be filled? Most members of the West Midlands general public are not going to be enthused by the prospect of parting with £100 for flying a 25 year old rust bucket from an airline they probably perceive as being slightly dodgy. My girlfriend has already checked I’ve been paying my life insurance when I told her! Hopefully Biman are good on their word. They have been great putting on these flights in the first place and hopefully the oddly high number of flights they are selling with a more odd reduced seat count can operate as planned.

The Dhaka flight is one thing and I doubt they will move it or have it rescheduled.

All those who have booked scenic flights have made travel arrangements -- sometime costing quite a bit of money -- in order to be in Birmingham to experience flying on the DC-10 - for some it will be their first and last chance - for others it will be a last and final goodbye to the aircraft they used to fly on many Moons ago.

Biman cannot move passengers around and scrub flights at their own whim unless they don't care that people lose money on pre-arranged travel. I am sure they would refund the Biman flights if they cancel but many have to travel distances and take other flights, book hotels, and so much more.

My flights to BHX on the Monday are not refundable. I would have to go whatever happens or lose the ticket.

I hope they will keep the flight schedules as they are and not swap people around and/or scrub flights or they would be getting themselves some very bad publicity.
