Thoughts On UA/CO Transatlantic 757

I will be flying UA EWR -STR later this month. I was surprised to see it will be an ex-CO 757! I'm probably showing my age, but this is the first time I've seen a 757 Transatlantic. Is this a relatively new thing?

I imagine the flight will be somewhat decent because there will be fewer people due to a smaller aircraft. Are there any other things I should expect different from the 747 / A340 / 777 / A330 flights I am accustomed to?

Really?? They've been doing this for years... I see both UA's and AA's 757s at MAN all the time. Its nothing new. Ive flown on a AA 757 from MAN-JFK. For me it was just a relatively normal flight in economy...

On the return trip you may get a free stop at Bangor or other fairly regular westbound 757 fuel stop location (Goose Bay, Gander, St. John's etc.) Following from Transport Canada daily occurrence reports for January 5, 2014:

A United Airlines Boeing 757 200 (UAL153), from Stuttgart (EDDS) to Newark (KEWR), reported that it was running short of fuel for its destination (KEWR) and asked to be diverted to Bangor (KBGR).

Umm, no! CO have been using 757s TATL since 1995, and AA and DL also use them to secondary European cities.

Objectively no, there shouldn't be any difference. The sCO 757s have nose-to-tail AVOD at every seat and 100% lie-flat J (if you are in J). The hard product is identical to the sCO 777s.

Some posters have complained about the cabin feeling "more cramped" because it is a single aisle rather than 2, but it's not something that has ever bothered me. IMHO it is purely psychological, people expect a "big plane" for TATL and think that the 757 is inferior even if it, objectively, is not.

A few years ago I was worried to fly TATL (AMS to IAH v/v) on a BBJ but the narrow cabin was nothing to be concerned about for the 12 hour flight (the only nuisance there were the inadequately small lavs on the BBJ).

I flew on a 757 from EWR to HAM back in 2006. Since eastbound TATL flights are usually overnight I didn't find it to be a big deal. I just took a sleeping pill after dinner and was pretty much out for the rest of the flight. Like others have said I found it to be a fairly typical flight in economy. Actually the only reason I was disappointed it was a 757 was because I'd flown on them many times before and I was hoping to experience a new type.

It might be odd being on a single aisle plane for a long flight but really there is nothing odd with a 757 on MIA-SEA or DFW-ANC those are long flights too. As long as the seat pitch is the same at a 763 777 there really is no difference. It is less people but it also a smaller plane.

If you are taking the flight in January, the major difference may be a fuel stop. Other than that, the service is about the same. Some people prefer the feeling of a widebody and flight time tends to be a bit shorter (10-30 minutes) since the 757 is one of the slowest airplanes on a typical transatlantic flight.

Right now with the strong January winds, STR-EWR is about 9 hours nonstop. The 757 can't do a flight that long with a full load, so if they airplane is anywhere near 100% capacity, you'll get a free stop in Goose Bay Canada, (or maybe Bangor). I personally wouldn't recommend a 757 flight from Germany to EWR in the winter since the possibility of a fuel stop is about 20-50%. Right now about half the flights are requiring a fuel stop, so make sure you don't have a tight connection since you would arrive 1-2 hours late. Outside of the winter high winds, fuel stops are rare.

Last August, I ended up on UA 119 which is a TATL 757 from EWR to FRA. I can only echo what others have said: in terms of service, there was little difference from other similar flights. The meal service may have been a bit quicker, actually, due to the lower number of passengers to be served - there were, of course, fewer F/As as well and less space for them, but there were also fewer extra requests, less running up and down the aisle and as a result, it all seemed to go a bit faster... or it was just a particularly fine crew on that flight.

The one thing that struck me was the feeling of space: I do like bright and large spaces, but not so much when I just want to relax and try to get some sleep. Then I want cozy, personal spaces and that's where the 757 delivered - so well that I'd even risk the fuel stop on a westbound crossing.

I did this for the first time in early Jan on EWR - CDG... Never again! I absolutely hated being in a narrow body for so long. Granted, I live in Asia, so even on short haul flights I travel on 77Ws and A380s, so I am biased, but I have to say it felt extremely cramped and I started to get really claustrophobic. I would not recommend it at all.

Umm, no! CO have been using 757s TATL since 1995, and AA and DL also use them to secondary European cities.

And Icelandair a few years earlier than 1995.

If memory correct, the longest scheduled 757 Transatlantic nonstop was NW on DTW-FRA, 3616 nm. Don't think the 757 lasted very long on that route. The only A.net photos are dated 2007.

Other than having 2 aisles, no. The plane has nose to tail AVOD & power outlets at each row. J is particularly nice with only 16 seats, I feel you get much more personalized service.

I took the 757 TATL for the first and so far only time from Ewr-Dub back in 2009. My only apprehension about taking a 757 TATL are the sometimes 130 to 140 mile an hour tail winds you may encounter on the eastbound trip across the pond. Given how much you can be thrown around sometimes as a result of those tail winds, I prefer a widebody, just for psychological reasons, as in if I'm on a larger airplane I feel as if not going to be thrown around as much as say on a 757. Overall, on my 6 hour Ewr-Dub we got a good ride and the AVOD really made the time go by quickly. I found the 757 to be a nice trans atlantic airplane, but I'll still take a widebody if i have the option.


Why are people so against low yields?! If lower yields means more people can travel abroad, i'm all for it

About two to three years ago I flew into FRA on a DL 763 and FRA-EWR on an ex-CO 752, and I gotta tell you, I felt like I was on a Bizjet on the way back. Fewer people, so more space at the gate, less people who would delay the boarding, better, quicker service, and AVOD nose to tail. DL's 767 was outdated, no personal AVOD, just two movies on bigger screens throughout the cabin. I was really surprised back then, since it was my first TATL flight on a 757, and since then, I've done it a few more it times and even when the flight was full, we still got quicker service (got my dinner everytime around 40 minutes after departure). Oh and less people means less bags, and that means you'll get your bag out sooner since it takes less time to have them unloaded, put on a cart, shuttled to the terminal, and so on  

I would do it any day, but only on ex CO-aircraft, I heard that AA, US and DL's 757 are an entirely different story... but I don't have any personal experience on them.

In J DL's 757 International seat at the moment is far inferior to UA's as they are the recliner style. They are updating them to the same seat that UA has, but I'm not sure of the timeline.
In Y there is virtually no difference. Each seat has AVOD on both airlines.

Now AA/US..that's a different story.
