Picking Up The Girlfriend Up At DXB - Queries

Happy new year everyone!

I will be meeting my girlfriend in DXB for valentines, I will be flying on LX from MAN via ZRH and she will be flying from HKG on EK. I will be landing at DXB T1 at 2140 and she will land in T3 at 2305. I wonder if anyone who knows DXB well enough and can suggest how I could pick her up, preferably in the airside?

Probably I will get off the plane, go to pick up baggage - is there anyway i can go back airside and pick her up at her arrival gate? I wanted to give her a surprise rather than just wait for her in the T3 meet and greet?

Comments please ladies and gentlemen, thank you!

T1 & T3 are not that far apart and a free bus service (landside) operates

If you have checked baggage you will have to go through immigration at T1 & (though I've never tried it) very much doubt you can backtrack at that point.

If you do not have checked baggage you probably can walk from T1 to T3 airside, though if you're on a remote stand that might
be problematic to (not sure) as don't know where the bus will drop you off

Hope this is of some help

Alternative solution for musapapaya: marry her before you meet up in Dubai.

Thank you guys for your feedback - what happens in dubai will stay in dubai, lol, on a serious note, thank you for the reminders, we know that - no public display of affection!

So it looks like I cannot go and pick her up at her gate then!

The first opportunity you will have to meet your guest at DXB will be as she exits customs on the lower level of T3. T1 and T3 are connected on the airside but once you're outside the building on the arrivals level it's actually very difficult to get between the two terminals.

Walking would make the most sense if you knew the airport well, but being a stranger, you'd have problems walking outdoors between T1 and T3 because there is no dedicated walkway between the two. You'd end up hugging the wall walking on the 2-foot wide curb along the winding roadway. If you had luggage, it'd be very diffucult.

There is a shuttle bus that runs between T1 and T3 but it only runs every 20 minutes.

Best option IMO as well as smart financial decision.....buy an "all day" Metro pass for 16 AED ($4 USD) and take the Metro from T1 to T3. It will be a 1-minute ride and takes you right to the center of T3. Purchase a 2nd "all day" pass for your guest so that when you leave DXB you can take the Metro instead of the taxis that charge a significant airport departure fee. You can take the Metro anywhere it goes for 24 hours all for the $4. If you know where your hotel is, you can get off at any Metro stop and grab a taxi to your hotel and save the additional airport fees.

Depending on what day of the week you arrive, the Metro stops running at midnight on weekdays and 0100 on weekends. With your friend arrivng at 2305, the Metro option probably won't work. It will however, be an easy trip for you between T1 and T3.

There are inexpensive ways to get around the "separate hotel room" dilema for unmarried couples in Dubai.

Haha, I was teasing you more than anything else. From what I understand the hotel room rule is very rarely enforced, especially in western hotels.

This is one weird thread. First of all -

Quoting musapapaya (Thread starter):
is there anyway i can go back airside and pick her up at her arrival gate?

Absolutely not. Perhaps I should have just ignored the topic but come on, have you never been to an airport before? What possible method could you use to pass security and immigration to get to the gate? Bonkers idea. You may as well ask if it's possible to get on her flight about an hour before it lands. And anyway, poor girl, give her a chance to collect herself after a plane ride, your suggestion just reminds me of seeing on some reality airport TV show a guy proposing to his GF as she came through customs to arrivals. OK you he loves her and everything, but she's been on this plane for hours and smells bad and feels a bit woozy and all she wants is to get home and have a shower and a low-key catch-up on the sofa with a takeaway and a glass of red before an early night. I think she said yes, hey maybe she was delighted, but I thought it was a bit much.

Then we have this -

Have you guys been to Dubai? Or are you kidding? Yes a couple got arrested for having sex on a public beach. But holding hands? Or kissing (like, on the cheek or a peck on the lips - you might have some problems with a big tongues and all snog fest, but that is kind of unpleasant for bystanders anyway)? Come on. And there is no "separate hotel room dilemma" in Dubai, in many cultures wives don't take their husbands' surnames when they're married e.g. Italy. Are we saying Italians have to get separate rooms in Dubai? Man, you guys need to get out and see the world. (Or use smileys.)

My statement was rather tongue-in-cheek. It was also a bit tongue-in-mouth.

Though I wouldn't take my girlfriend to Dubai, considering the laws they have against cohabitation before marriage, etc. So many nicer (and less archaic for such matters) places.

Regarding:

Did someone call the morality police?

It may be unpleasant, but you can look away, can't you? Or should your Parliament pass the "too lazy to look away, so no public French kissing (we hate the French, anyway)" law?

And there is no "separate hotel room dilemma" in Dubai,

Having lived in Dubai for years, I can guarantee that there could be an issue with non-married, female visitors and their lodging arrangements. I had a single, female ex-coworker visit and the immigration agent asked where she was staying and why she was visiting. She told him she was staying with me. Immigration told her that she would have to make separate hotel accomodations. We made a reservation at some $40 'dive hotel' in Deira and got the printed confirmation to show them and we were on our way...she still stayed with me but at least we satisified the immigration agent.

The following day I took her to the admin office to get an airside pass to visit me at work and on the application it asked where the applicant was staying while in Dubai. The office manager told us the application would be rejected by the airport police if she listed that she was staying with me so we again had to use the 'temporary' hotel confirmation number.

Thank you for the detailed response. I was only asking because I know Ti and T3 in Dubai is in the same building and one can walk between them airside, I just wanted to understand more about its layout and whether its possible to get my baggage and/or through immigration and use some kind of transfer routes to get to T3.
