To celebrate my 9 years on a.net, I've decided to start a thread on what has changed in aviation in the last 9 years.
9 years ago we were well into the introduction of 50 seat RJs into the US fleet. I find it ironic they are now being phased out.
9 years ago we were discussing threads on MD-80 re-engine (MD-80NEO if you will.)
9 years ago the ME3 were benign. IIRC, it was in 2005 when the discussions on EK started noting it would become huge (it was about 27% of its current size back in 2004). Recall it wasn't until 2008 that India became the #1 trade partner with the UAE.
The 77W was just entering service and exceeding its performance metrics, but there remained concern due to the 'huge unprecedented engines.' Because of said concerns and fleet 'top offs,' 77E deliveries were strong until 2007. And then they weren't...
In 2004, the A332 was in its stride. It wasn't until 2009 that efficiency improvements 'revitalized' the A333 sales (due to range improvements).
The 787 was still a concept called the 7E7. There was still debate on the sonic cruiser on a.net...
The A380 was under development with first flight over a year into the future and the A350 wasn't being considered as Airbus had just shelved a concept called the A305 (more 787 sized with much less CFRP).
It wouldn't be until July 2008 that carbon brakes made it to the 737NG in an industry now where the staff cannot even consider steel brakes...

And then over at LGA, DEN is still their only beyond perimeter destination, so nothing has changed there, and probably won't over the course of the next 9 years......
Meanwhile, also just about 9 years ago, WN announced to the world that it is breaking its mold...... and will begin service to DEN. Pax traffic at DEN at the end of 2005 was some 43.4M. WN began service in Jan of 2006, and ever since, WN has replaced F9 as DEN's second largest carrier (after UA) as well as WN having the highest market share in quite a number of important markets to/from DEN. As of the end of 2013 (final numbers not in yet) it is estimated that DEN's pax traffic will be around some 53M. The Southwest Effect?

January 2005 was the last time I got a complementary meal in economy on a domestic flight on UA. At that point they had gone to BOB on most routes already, but they still had meals on flights beyond a certain length so I got one on IAD-SMF. By the end of that year complementary meals were a thing of the past on everyone but CO.

In January 2005, United Airlines was the only U.S. based airline to fly nonstop from the US to Mainland China, from San Francisco to Shanghai and Beijing, and Chicago to Shanghai and Beijing. That changed in May 2005, when American Airlines launched its first non-stop service ever to China, from Chicago to Shanghai, followed by Continental Airlines in June 2005, when they started flying Newark-Beijing.
