The Best Looking 727-200

Hi guys,

As I am getting older, I tend to look back at the golden era of commercial aviaton, in the form of collecting models of that time

Now, I want to buy one of the most precious airliners that ever flew the skies. Question : which do you think was the best looking 727-200?

Here is my short list ( not in order of preference)

- American Airlines
- CP Air
- United ( 70's colours )
- Lufthansa ( 70's colours )
- Pan Am ( bill board colours or 70's colours..? )

Any suggestion ?

cheers

SQ773

It's up to you which schemes you like, colours or metal or billboard schemes.
CP Air and Pan Am billboard looked pretty good on a 727. Pan Am 70s colours were more iconic on a 707 or 747, they were not a major 727 operator before they took over National which meant their downfall.
If I were to buy a 727 model I'd think of any scheme of United or Eastern, the first customers.
Also I think Iberia's later scheme was particularly nice on a 727.

Hi guys,
Easy answer for me...
Ansett's 'comet' or 'flying stars' scheme on the 727-200... All white fuselage and tail with a white Southern Cross and Federation Star trailing lines of colour on a blue background... Brilliant! And I really loved the full-stop, so Eightys....
I did like the Pan Am billboard scheme on the 727, plus the above-mentioned Iberia, CP Air and Eastern 'hockey stick' schemes. Of those, unfortunately the only one of the four I ever saw 'in the flesh' was the Iberia one...
Special mention too to Australia's own East West with their green, gold and white 727-200 obtained from Ansett.
One of the worst? The RNZAF 727-100Cs... And incidentally the 4x727-100 of the USAF (and Marines?) were very ordinary as well.
Cheers,
Bunumuring.

I also love the Pan Am billboard, but it also reminds me of the final Pan Am years and of other operators that used its name and livery and had nothing to do with the original one. As MEA-707 quoted, the old Pan Am Livery is not quite iconic either...
Eastern is without any doubt one of the best looking IMHO, specially the silver livery, niot the white one...

cheers

Ironic, considering your name. I have always found this to be a very attractive paint scheme on a B727-200:

Other paint schemes, like Braniff Ultra or CPAir look attractive on any airplane. But, I thought SQ balanced the shape well and made it look even sleeker.

I'll extend this to all 727 series. Here are some of the best liveries in my opinion:

Whoa! Whats the story with the 'Policia Federal' 727... Matt black, wingletted, no windows? One mean looking beast and surely one of the best looking 727s ever! I have never seen photos of that plane before, but I have seen more 'normal' looking 727s belonging to the Mexican Police.

The SIA 727s did look awesome in that colourscheme... A great match of scheme and shape.

I would have loved to have seen a 727-200 in the current Qantas scheme... Hint hint to the more artistic, creative types here!

Cheers,
Bunumuring.

Hi mate,
Do you know why the meatball's colour was changed? I agree that the black one looks best.
Cheers,
Bunumuring.

Because Continental's reputation was in a freefall for most of the 1980's. When Gordon Bethune took over as CEO he knew the airline needed a fresh start in the public eye; and new color scheme accomplished just that.

Luckily Bethune made many, many, many, needed and positive changes on the company's inside as well.

Hi mate,
You misunderstood my question.
I know why the entire livery was changed, but I am asking why did the COLOUR of the meatball change in the 70s, or 80s or whenever it was that it happened... You know, keeping the livery intact but changing the meatball's colour from black to red...
Thanks,
Bunumuring.

+1. That livery is still easily my favorite. It looked good on everything but to me really stood out on the 727, 757, and L1011.

LH's 727 livery just screams vintage when on the 727. IMO, it's the best livery applied to it.

Personally it would be a toss up between.....

Iberia (the scheme that is being phased out now)
Pan Am (either the billboard or blue cheatline scheme)
JAL (with the orange and black cheatlines because I like the scheme)
Lufthansa (last scheme they had, blue cheatline not the current all white)
American (with the AA)
United (with the tulip)

IB, PA and LH were among the 727s I used to see all the time at LHR so probably one of them
UA and AA (could add AS too), I've flown on so would also give them house room.

As you have a Spanish flag..why not go with Iberia?
