I'm just listening to Steve Wright on Radio 2 here in the UK, and he just read out the following factoid:
Question: What is the fastest you could fly round the world, using only scheduled passenger flights?"
Answer: 44 hours.
I'm now curious if this is true, I would have thought you could do it faster than that. I'm also curious as to what routing would be taken. So I'm throwing down the gauntlet to a.net - find a round the world routing using scheduled flights, that takes less than 44 hours. Time includes time spent waiting for connections.

The official rules for round the world flying as specified by the FAI Sporting Code, section 2 shall be used:
The course of a round-the-world record must start and finish at the same point and cross all meridians; the course must be at least 36,787.559 kilometres (22,858.729 mi) long (which is the length of the Tropic of Cancer). The course must include set control points at latitudes outside the Arctic and Antarctic circles.

In 2006 I flew EWR-SIN-HKG-SFO in 44 hours on SQ. So it is doable. However, now that SQ has dropped the ULH flights it might take a little longer. I had about 6 hours in HKG so I did a little sight seeing. Otherwise my time might have been shorter.

I guess to be a "proper" RTW, you'd have to have a route including north, south, east and west hemispheres, otherwise you could just find the shortest routes around a pole like NRT-YYZ-LHR-NRT, which I guess isn't in the spirit of things.
Including all 4 hemispheres, something like CDG-LAX-CAN-NBO-CDG (all on Skyteam!) or DXB-JKT-NRT-SEA-DXB.
As to the timings, you could spend weeks loking for a schedule that works. The first one I tried comes in at 47h25m:

So far, I find 44 hours impressive. My first attempt at finding flights has them scheduled for 59:15 hours. Routing is LAX-FRA-BKK-SIN-SYD-LAX, 23,676 miles. How long do I have to allow for changing planes at airports?

Well, don't know about the fastest route according to the rules stated in reply 2, but a couple years ago, I read about a FSimmer who got inspired by Jules Verne and his famous book "Around the World in 80 days". His idea was to follow the track of Phineas Fogg as close as possible, using real-world airline schedules of that day (well, actually flying them in FSX) trying to complete the route in less than 80hrs.
Of course, he did some adjustments (flying LHR-CAI instead of LHR-CDG-CAI, going for longer layovers than necessary in order to compensate for the crappy timezone management in the sim, etc...), but in the end, he proved that it was possible to do the legendary journey in 24x less time than back then.
