I am going to VIE for work late next month and have a few extra days in the schedule, and I'm looking at options for aviation-related side trips. My priorities, in approximate order are to log new types, see interesting places, log new airports, log new airlines. Does anybody have any advice? I have a few ideas, but want to make sure I'm not missing anything. Here are a few of the things I'm considering:
1. Prague. I've wanted to visit Prague for ages. OK has reasonably-priced flights to PRG from BTS (near VIE) on ATRs. This would hit all four of my priorities. It seems like the obvious choice, but the flights only operate Mon/Wed/Fri, and I'm not sure I can make those days work. It might turn into a train trip, if I make it at all.
2. Linz. Welcome Air operates Dornier 328s on VIE-LNZ for OS, and the 328 would be new to my log. Do they fly the 328s anywhere else?
3. Innsbruck. From what I can tell, VIE-INN is the cheapest route where I can catch the elusive F70 for my log. (I booked an F70 on KL about 2 years ago, and it was subbed with an E90.) Are there any other F70 routes that don't cost a lot?
4. Air China. I see that CA runs a tag-on from VIE to BCN that seems to be bookable. This one is very tempting. Are there any other interesting 5th freedom flights from VIE?
So those are the ideas I've looked at, but I want to hear suggestions from the forum. Are there any unique options in VIE that I'm missing?
Thanks. Those are all interesting. I've logged the F100, so maybe not as interested in TGD, but I'll definitely consider the others.
There is a slight chance that I may have flown one of the OS Fokkers back in 1997. I flew JFK-VIE-KBP on OS, but I wasn't logging flights at the time and have forgotten details. Old schedules suggest that the flights were A310 and MD80, but I recall the plane going to KBP being smaller than an MD. OS had F70s at the time, so it's possible that I rode on one then, but I'll probably never know for sure.
