I am not sure if this is such a big deal. If you have the mobile app or have email access, your airline will remind you 24 hours before with an email to check in. I guess it does help if you are on the road and the boarding pass is sent to you.
I can see some logistical hurdles, but overall, a small step - don't see this as a game changer.

The whole rationale for checking in for a flight has pretty much gone away - it used to be that you checked in when you were at the airport so that the airline knew you were there. Now that they're encouraging you to check in as long as possible before the flight when there's no guarantee you actually make it to the airport, what's the point? It's a whole lot easier to just have the airline do it for you and have the email show up in your inbox. That's an extra couple of minutes that you don't have to spend navigating around a website or app.

What about on a Y ticket? I thought you basically had no obligation and it was just voided if you no-show... if you are checked in by a third party, does that change? Or do you still need to formally cancel to receive the refund?
Never had the luxury of buying Y tickets, so don't know.

I think JetBlue does not have a range of ticket classes like legacies do. Ticket prices are based on availability (they keep getting higher as more seats get filled). If you do not show for your flight, you lose the seat and JetBlue does not have the obligation to find you an alternative flight. Under this model, they also do not oversell their flights - so there is no issue of being bumped.
Because of this mode, B6 is able to check people in without the hassle of worrying if too many people show up for a flight.
That's my understanding of B6 model, I am sure some a.net members are more knowledgable about and can confirm.

Seriously...a "hurdle"? Especially at a time where we all have smartphones...it takes 10 seconds to check in!
Am I the only one that thinks this is completely non-sensical? The whole point of "checking-in", whether it be in person or online, is to say "hey, I'm just letting you know that I really am going to be taking that seat that I paid for." If anything, this concept is more important today then of years ago because flights are routinely overbooked, load factors are generally higher, and people, in generally, change their plans more often.
I rather think that the traveler should give the airline a heads up that they really intend on flying (i.e. check-in) at least an hour before departure, but not more than 24 hours (because before that, chances that your plans will change are much greater). If they don't say anything up to an hour before departure (or longer for international flights), then the airline should assume that traveler isn't going to be flying and can make arrangements to use their seat, if need be.
If the airline "checks-in" the passenger without actually ensuring they will be flying, they'll have even more gate no-shows. Which means more work for the gate agent just minutes before departure, while they deal with offloading the no-shows, adding the standby passengers, and making seat assignments.
If they do end up using this system permanently, I think they should at least change the nomenclature (although I know they won't). It just doesn't make any sense for the airline to send you an email saying "We've checked you in for you!". It should be something like "We know you've got a busy schedule, so this is just a reminder that your flying with us tomorrow! Here's your boarding pass...."

Yes if your ticket is changeable/refundable.
But I always travel on the cheapest fare, and I pay for the seat whether I use it or not. So why not check me in in advance? Means i don´t have to remember when I am not at home.
If you mean your return leg of your journey, then see my reply #8. Either way, though, not quite sure how you can forget you have a flight. (Although I'm sure it happens to some people.) Even if you forget to check-in on your phone/computer, or can't, you can still check-in when at the airport.

It makes sense to check in, now they will make an announcement for everyone that has not boarded the plane not sure if they are there or not. When 30 people don't check in for a flight the airline can simply remove them as soon as the flight closes out (or by whatever policy the airline uses for that)

Lufthansa startet automatic checkin in 2011 and since it proved to work well they added more routes in 2012:

This is similar to WN's Early Bird Check In, except with WN there's an incentive to be among the first to check in so you don't end up with the dreaded middle seat. A nice touch by B6 but nothing more.
