I am awaiting a flight at Edmonton, and I just noticed that Delta No 189 has appeared on the departure board with destination of Beijing at 1900 MDT.

delta.com indicates that the flight is diverting. Any idea why it is diverting?

I'd say probably medical, if it's scheduled to fly out soon after landing.

After having spent 7 months in Edmonton, I can only feel pity for those passengers. Just kidding, but either way that sucks.

How is YEG on the flight path of DTW-PEK?

Should have been much, much further north at that longitude.

It was. It first turned west and then turned to fly south to Edmonton. As they say, probably a medical. However, it flew at least an hour and a half after diverting until it landed at Edmonton. Feel sorry for the ill person.

At least it diverted to a location with decent medical facilities and infrastructure...i.e. sometimes aircraft divert to remote locations in a medical just to learn that the place where they diverted to doesn't have the appropriate infrastructure to deal with the ill passenger. Sometimes it's better to continue flying than landing immediately, especially for sub-saharan Africa, rural Russia, and the great far North.

Yep. Should have pulled it up on FlightRadar. Probably the nearest place with a medical facility that wasn't in an igloo.

Many airports in Canada get quite a few medical diversions. Since May 1 there have been over 20 (not counting any on Canadian domestic flights) involving the following carriers (a few had more than one diversion). Also doesn't include a few where the aircraft was over Canada but they diverted to a U.S. airport.
Source: Transport Canada daily occurrence reports.

Air Canada
British Airways
Lufthansa
Air France
KLM
XL Airways France
Norwegian
Aeroflot
Transaero
American
Delta
United
Alaska
Japan Airlines
USAF (C-17 en route Ramstein, Germany - Memphis diverted to Montreal)

Those flights diverted to the following Canadian airports. Gander handled the most with 6, followed by Goose Bay with 5.

Gander
Goose Bay
St. John's
Stephenville
Halifax
Montreal
North Bay, Ontario (YYB), an AS 739 en route EWR-SEA
Winnipeg
Vancouver

Plus the Edmonton diversion in this thread.

That is simply not true. The decision to divert on a medical and where to divert is taken by committee, essentially, with dispatch, the Captain, the medical service the airline has contracted to provide info. and whomever is on board who is tending to the ill passenger all involved in the decision. There is no point in diverting somewhere where the passenger won´t be taken care off adequately.
