Trans-atlantic business class.
Question (for those that have experienced at least 3 different carriers): Which cabins and flights did you prefer and why? Please enter the top reasons for your first choice. I'm curious to see the results.
CO-777 MAN-EWR, BA-744 LHR-JFK, AF-777 CDG-JFK, DL-777 CDG-JFK
1. DL: Cabin comfort (sense of spaciousness in 777 front cabin); F/A attention (and lack of when requested); Leather Trim Seats
2. BA (though I liked bed seat felt cramped and didn't like sitting backwards)
3. CO (I slid down the seat when in full recline, couldn't get comfortable, also find the CO cabin very bland)
4. AF (Felt cramped. DL uses 2-2-2 for Business Class on 777, AF has 2-3-2) (editors note: I used to work for AF and am a general fan so this is a sad finding for me)

SFO-LHR VS 744 (Upper Class)
1. Lufthansa Business Class is what I call a Economy Plus Class (at least at VS). Nothing special...you slide down the new seats and can`t get comfortable...the F/A´s are mostly rude...the food`s ok....the inflight entertaiment system seems like we are still at 1992! The onboard service is bad as well...long Business Class lines...The lounge feels cold and is not spectecular!
2. Trans World Airlines was that what I expected from internatinal Business Class. First Class Service...the food was outstanding...the inflight entertaiment
seemed like from the 80`s nothing special...but the staff was the best in the airline industy! The Trans World One Check in was outstanding and the lounges (looked very used) was always comfortable with a "nice" 70`s outfit!
I really miss TWA....come back soon!
3. Virgin Atlantic is what I call the Airline of today! Upper Class is the best Transatlantic Business Class (with SQ on FRA-JFK). The food was like in a restaurant....inflight massages are very nice....the Inflight Bar is brilliant...seemed like the old TWA and Pan Am Piano Bars. The Lounge is fab.
Hairdresser...Restaurant Service....even I always would go with TWA (if they would be around) VS Upper Class is the best!

1. VS Upper Class (well, not quite business, more "business plus"), LHR-JFK (free upgrade with a little help from friends)
2. CO BizFirst, IAH-LGW (OnePass miles)
3. BA, DEN-LHR (free upgrade)
VS - outstanding, meals when you want them, great seats, great IFE (and this was before V.port), great crew - and when they were too busy, they didn't mind me helping myself to fine wine at the bar!
CO - very pleasant, good food, friendly FAs. Seat was ok but nothing special.
BA - crap. Nuff said. Okay, I'll expand a little. Rude FAs, IFE was only average, and food was very forgettable.
I'll mention EK since they do fly trans-Atlantic, although my portion was not (paid upgrade one-way). Again, nothing special on the seat side, IFE was reasonable, but the FAs were some of the friendliest around.

DL has improved greatly in the past 5 months, the revamped the way they do their service on 1 October, very nice. Comfortable seats. IFE has gaps when they forget to restart the tracks sometimes. FA's always nice
CO 777 was great, seat is more difficult to get comfortable in and also only 55" of seat pitch versus DL's 60 inches. CO food was very very good both ways. IFE was good.. Exceptional FA service
KL 763 very nice but not exceptional. FA's very nice

Here's my opinion: Best ever?
1st: TWA- Transworld One. (My last transatlantic flight with them was on an ex-Aeroflot 767)
Best airline food I have ever had! (and I've had a lot) Just when you thought you had enough, then came the dessert cart!
The entertainment was top notch. I really liked the video movies that played at your seat. (That particular flight had a very good selection of movies)
I found the seat to be very comfortable even though it wasn't 180 degrees flat. The seat cushion was soft and I was able to sleep.
The FA's we very nice and liked to talk to customers. We had a long discussion about TWA's history and that devil "Icon". I really liked the new Ambassadors Club when it opened up in STL back in the late 90's. What a view of the flight line!
TWA-gone but not forgotten.
On a separate note: I did fly a 747 to HNL back in 1995 also in TW1 (not long after they introduced it). Biggest darn seat I've ever sat in. Very comfortable and ohh those desserts! Sat in row 1. What a ride! Best landing ever!
2nd: Continental- BusinessFirst.
I really don't care for the latest seat incarnation! Because of the angle of the lie flat position (which isn't flat), you slide to the floor and the end result is a transatlantic wedgie! Your best suited to use the "cradle position".The seat cushion was OK but a little firm for me.
There was plenty of entertainment programming, but my last flight had no movies that I had particular interest in. (Not their fault)
The food is on the decline both in quality and quantity. The ice cream sundae cart is getting a little old.
I do love the 777! The cabin was clean throughout the flight. The FA's see to that! They are also very attentive to the customer. Continental took great care of me during a personal time of bereavement by allowing me to return home early from LGW and made sure my connections were changed upon my arrival back at IAH. The even did it at no charge. I will never forget that.
The new Presidents Club at IAH-E is a site to behold.
I flew on an award ticket to LGW from DFW on a 777 in the first class 1-2-1 configuration. I loved the seat! In particular, the swivel seat feature which allows you to look directly out the window was fantastic! The Bose headphones were great! CO should follow suit.
The food was a major disappointment. I ordered beef stew and it only had one lousy piece of meat in it. The quantity and quality was poor for first class standards. I really expected much more.
The return from LHR was again on a 777 but this time in the 2-2-2 configuration. Nice seat but I liked the 1-2-1 configuration better. Since it was an early flight, the food service was even less impressive. (no hot meal)
If I had to pay full fare for that I would be pissed! The FA's were professional but not particularly friendly.
I did try sitting in the business class seat as I disembarked just to see how it compared to others. It was more comfortable than the Business First seat with approximately the same legroom. I can only guess that the food service was as dissapointing as it was in First.
I would have liked to have tried American's First Class back when they were profitable. I'm sure then they would have met my high expectations.

NW: DTW-AMS, 747-400, Zone A, best NW biz class I have had, super crew, love the forward cabin of the 747. Really enjoyed the old First Class Sleeper seats they had at the time (see airline meals.net for pics)
DC-10, DTW-AMS, arrived early and got on the DC-10 flight, had first row of center seats, bad choice, but never the less they were still the old F/C seats and very nice. (see airline meals.net for pics)
KL AMS-DTW, 747 Upper Deck, great service, seats ok, second service was great, love those little dutch houses. (see airline meals.net for pics)
KL ORD-AMS 747-400 Combi, Zone A, This was shortly before the AF merger, staff was confused, and not really into that night. (see airline meals.net for pics)
CO AMS-EWR 767-400, not really finding the new seats very comfertable, can't get it to a position that fits. The service is a mix between Biz and "old" style First Class. A very differnt product from the normal Biz service, excellent crews, and great food. (see airline meals.net for pics)

AA DFW-ZRH 777 (April 2001) Amazing crew on this flight, yes they were "mature" but they knew their job, and did an excellent service. The seats were great, and as this was my first 777 flight, I thought everything was super.
AA ZRH-DFW, again Amazing AA F/A's all around, I remember I wrote to AA afterwords to tell them how great the flights were.

1993-SFO-LHR=BA/742 Club World was very cramped and crowded on the main deck. Service was amicable, not overly friendly nor rude. Food was decent but nothing to write home about. Was surprised at the skimpy breakfast on a nearly 11 hour flight. The return was lovely as they upgraded me to P as I was the only smoker in J. I did notice a significant difference in the amentity kits between the two, even the quality of the cases was a remarkable difference.
1995-LAX-LHR=BA/744 There were some noticable differences but the cabin was still quiet crowded, service was barely amicable, food was good but nothing outstanding. Amentity kits were a bit better.
1997-LAX-ZRH-BCN=SR/M11. Cabin was quiet nice, much better than BA, food was awesome, crew was somewhat curt which I believe is they are trying to act like the French. Excellent product, high quality. I wonder what it's like now. Return was in P and was suprerior. There's not enough to say about the superb service and professionalism. They really try to master perfection.
I"ve heard excellent things about AF, Virgin, CO.
Pretty good things about DL even though they have dirty planes a good part of the time, they try hard.
AA mixed reviews from friends in that being no consistency among the crews, frugal products and crampt cabins, menus seldom change.
UA about the same as AA but try a bit harder than AA.
I haven't heard anything pleasant about LH at all. All negative when it comes to them.
The same goes for IB. Crews just disappear after they rush the first meal service out.
