I am not trying to start a A v B war!!!

I have never been lucky enough to fly on an Airbus A330 or A340 and was wondering what you all prefer comfort wise: The 777's or the A340's and A330's? I am attracted to the fact that the Airbus's have a 2-4-2 standard configuration while the 777's have a 2-5-2 standard configuration.

In general I prefer an Airbus over a Boeing but was just wondering what you guys think. Thanks.

Please do not post anything that degrades Airbus or Boeing products unless you can give a good reason why the product is bad.

I prefer the 777 simply because it has more room. It feels very open inside, the seats are fine (even in 2-5-2), just try to get an aisle. I heard somewhere that when UAL was deciding between the 777 and A330, CEO Stephen Wolf hit his head on the overhead bin of the 330 (Wolf is rather tall), and that had quite an influence on the order. Whether this is true I do not know. Most airlines operate 777s in 3-4-3 I believe, only UA and a couple others have the 2-5-2.

I thought that most operators went with the 3-3-3 seating arrangements which in my opinion is very comfortable. Flew onboard a couple of BA's 777's with this layout and I really enjoyed it. The only experience I have had with the Airbus models was with the A340, which I had flown from MIA-MAD and found the aircraft to be ok...nothing really special. I prefer the 777 due to the spaciousness inside, with the unique overhead bins...the 3-3-3 layout (of course airlines decide that) also the power behind the machine. On take-off from MIA, on the A340 we were climbing but it was damn slow and it was almost leveled flight...just prefer the power of the 777. Quietness I did find the A340 to me more quiet but the 777 (GE90 from my experience) was not horrendous, or unbearable...same noise as a 767 or 757 in my opinion.

no they dont

only UA and a couple others have the 2-5-2

Nearly all 777 operators have 3x3x3 or 2x5x2 in coach...particularly for longhaul.

Only TG, EK, OS, and a few others have 3x4x3 on any of their twinjets

I prefer the airbus because they have like 2-4-2 seating config or something versus the 3-3-3. So if I'm traveling solo or with 1 other partner than we won't be worried about being stuck with other people and sutch. ..geek

I prefer a B777 all the way. I have never flown on a A330 though. The 777 just looks more fresh, confortable + I love Boeing, so my choice is obvious.

Well, both the A330/340 (have just flown the A340 though) and the B777 are comfortable to me, while the 777 is indeed more spacious. However, to me the looks of an aircraft count to, and therefore the 777 is the clear winner.

I don't like the looks of the A330/A340 with their rear being higher than the front, like sticking its tail up. In comparison the B777 is really elegant, although it still loses to the DC10 and MD11, but that's another story...

777 cabin is nice to fly on, if not a little noisy. I will get back to you on the 340 once I have flown TG to BKK on their A346. I expect there will be slightly less noise and similar pitch, but slightly narrower seats. Either way I'm happy. I'm still flying.

On RTW trips recently I've had the opportunity to travel on a number of both 777's and A340's.

For me, by far the most relaxing parts of the trips were on the A340 - in fact when travelling from Santiago to Auckland, it's a bit disconcerting to be 7 hours from the nearest land (except Antarctica), and you can't hear engine noise.....

Bigger 777 cabin gives more IMPRESSION of space, even if it might be taken up by more seats. Also obviously climb-out was more entertaining from the greater TTW ratio of the twin.

Both fabulous planes. If I was driving, 777. As a passenger, A340

Just a question is the take off performance of the T7 really noticeable superior to the take off performance of the A330?

Thanks for the replies.

I personally prefer the A330's looks (especially the A332) over the 777, though I understand that the 777's are marvelous machines. I find Airbus planes just to be more comfortable in general, especially when I compare the A320 series to the 737 series. (Don't get me wrong here, I find Boeing's to be spectacular planes as well!!)

So most of you say you find the B777's more spacious. Is this becuase these planes are wider then Airbus's A330/A340's? The maximum cabin widths are listed below:

Airbus A330 & A340: 17' 4" (5.28 m)
Boeing 777: 19' 3" (5.86 m)

I guess I will make up my mind when I fly on an A332 from ORD - MAN on BMI later this year, and possibly an A340 if I ever go to New Zealand. I hopefully will fly Bussines class -- BMI's F class -- when I take BMI, which should be an enjoyable experience!

So it looks like people prefer the 777, so far. Lets keep it coming guys...

Thanks,

I've flown several flights on B777-200/-200ERs, A330-200/300 and A340-300 - overall favorite: A340-300.

First of all, it's the quietest amongst all of them, and for me - as a passenger - that's, next to seat comfort, the main point. As for seat comfort - I prefer the 8-abreast seating over 9- or 10-abreast, just as much as the 6-abreast in C-Class over 7-abreast, so the choice there's easy.

Regarding comfort, well, I'm just under 1.9m tall, but have never hit my head on either of the planes, and the greater distance to the overhead bins does nothing for me, so, for me, I don't see any advantage in the interior design of the B777s.

Regarding takeoff performance, ok, the A340-300 is rather slow compared to the B777 or A330, but so what? It gets the job done, and gets it done safely. That's what matters.

Given the choice between any of these or a B767, B747, A310 or MD11, I'd take the A330/A340/B777 - but, as mentioned above, if my choice is from within this group, and flying my favorite will not make me have to pay more, or wait more than 15 minutes longer at any airport along my routing, then I'll take the A340.

On the other hand... as long as it has wings, engines, the name of a decent airline on the outside, the name of a plane manufacturer I trust on there as well, then I'll fly on it.

Regards,
Frank

From what I have heard the Tripe-Sevens performance whilst taking off is superior to the A340's, not the A330's. I am not exactly sure why this is, but I would assume it's becuase particularly the A340-200 and A340-300 have small engines, even if there are four of them!

Not sure if this is the reason, though and a good question as I was wondering this as well! Keep the posts coming...
