Top 5 Pilot Jobs In USA?

Today in 2005 what would you experts say the top jobs to get are? I'm assuming it's a different list from the year 2000!

What are your criteria? In terms of $$, probably Delta, Fedex, UPS, ABX, Continental, Northwest. In terms of a stable, positive work environment, Southwest, Fedex, UPS, ABX, Continental. In terms of schedule, there are corporate pilots flying Gulfstreams and Globals who only work around 600 hours per year. In terms of adrenaline, #1 would have to be Burt Rutan's test pilot, followed by the Tomcat drivers, if they haven't retired all those already. Personally, I'm shooting for the smaller freight airlines (Kalitta, Atlas, Arrow) due to the quick upgrade time. And yes, I know Atlas isn't exactly small.

I just want to expand on this a bit. They may only fly 600 hours a year, but flying 14+ hours from the U.S. to, let's say Bum Funk China* and sitting there in the Rat's Nest Inn for a week or two would not make for a great job, unless you're in to that sort of thing.

In other words you may only fly 600 hours, but you're away from home a heck of a lot longer than that. And 600 hours of flying is quite a bit for a corporate pilot. It involves a lot of sitting time away from home. It's not like the airlines where you fly your rear off for 3 or 4 days and have the next few days off. I flew just under 400 last year and I think I'm a bit overworked. Big grin But most of our trips are day trips with few overnights (2 to 3 a month), so I've got it pretty good. The $$$ could be a little better, though.

Don't get me wrong, there are good Gulfstream and Global jobs out there, and I'd like to have one. But there are just as many that stink. Just don't confuse flight hours with time away from home.

* Disclaimer: No offense to the Chinese people. I'm sure most Chinese people wouldn't want to fly to Enterprise, Alabama and sit there for two weeks.

I gotta think UPS or FedEx would be right up near the top of my list. Both are good solid companies who even in todays industry are just printing money. I have worked for both solid companies and companies teetering. Theres a whole different feel you have when you don't know if the doors will be locked next time you go to work. Or if every payday you sprint to the bank to cash your check because your afraid it might bounce if you just deposit it. Not a good feel I can assure you.

Have to agree there. Makes me sick too. I had job offers from Delta and FedEx. Chose the wrong one. Ah, hindsight.

I'd say hopping around the caribbean in a twin otter or a dash-8 would top my list, for sure...



Sure, we're concerned for our lives. Just not as concerned as saving 9 bucks on a roundtrip to Ft. Myers.

Far less traffic, less congestion, smoother air....not as much fun as a Twin Otter on floats, perhaps, but flying at night can be much more enjoyable than daytime flying.

Doona, I have to admit, I should have mentioned the island hopping jobs; a Twin Otter on floats would certainly be a blast. But I must also say that flying at night can be very great fun indeed. During the day, you see all the air pollution over a big city, but at night you just see the lights. Traffic is much lighter at night, making for a much less stressful experience. An active electrical storm in the distance is much prettier at night. A full moon on top of an overcast layer is certainly very cool. A full moon over snow-covered landscape with clear skies is even better. And you don't get auroras during the day.

What's the criteria for "top five pilot jobs"? Schedule, pay, job security, fringe benefits, advancement opportunities, location?

Any number of pilot jobs can fall under each of these criteria.

United 747-400. Particularly flights from O'Hare and Los Angelos to Bangkok (through the night). I understand United's employees morale are quite low, but just the idea of flying that beauty... ahhhhh!

For those who like flying FedEx and UPS, night flying can be cool but with the cargo schedule you wont last long after you retire.

In my opinion, any position where your the captain is great. I'd fly for United or America West and for the regionals, American Eagle, ExpressJet, or MESA.
