I was looking at some some photos of Orient Thai airline fleet, and I took a good look at both there 747 classic and L1011. I started to think about how both of these air craft had and very good track record. My question is which is better the 747 classic or L1011 tristars. When I see topic about TWA, most of the time the L1011 talk about first then the 747. I am a 747 fan but there is about the L1011 that make me think. For example the L1011 has the best hands down safety record of any airliner, it also has one of the most solid build airliner ever. I want to know which one do the public think is better.

Statistics are pure BS when it comes to this sort of thing, since there are too few incidents, and those incidents are too different, to have any statistical significance. But if you want to play that game the 330, 340 and 777 have never had a fatality in pax service, and the latter two have never had a fatality.
The 747 can be said to be more commercially succesful. As for "better", they are both very good aircraft.

I totally agree with Starlionblue. But if I HAD to pick one, I would pick the 747 just because it has been so succesful and it's the "Qeen of the Skies" (for now at least). I also like the way the 747 looks (just my opinion).

I think most would say that the 747 series has been far more successful and managed to "do more" for the int'l traveling public... but I do agree that the L1011 was a great plane... still is, actually ! In terms of my own personal experience and comfort... two long-hauls come to mind...
A flight from ATL to JNB on a 744....
A flight from PDX in Oregon to Bangkok, Thailand on Delta in the early 90's, via Seoul.... on an L1011..
Both in economy coach. The L1011 flight was far more comfortable....
coach seating in the 744 next to the window for nearly 20 hours on-board with a head cold from JNB to ATL was the most awful flying experience I have ever had.

I suppose you have to define "better"... I believe it is a matter of taste and personal opinion. Also, better in terms of reliability, fuel efficiency, passenger comfort, range, etc etc....?
Personaly, I always liked all tri-jets (727, Trident, 1011, DC10, TU154). If you think abour flying on one of them, I would highly recommend the 1011 - simply because there will be many more opportunities for many more years on 747s than on the 1011.
