I always recommend you go
IAD- LAX- HKG on a hybrid UA/SQ itinerary. You can't beat SQ's economy.
Personally, I'm planning on going DCA- ORD- HKG on UA entirely in Sept. but that's just because its cost effective and I'd like to be able to upgrade.

UA is a good option, as far as I'm concerned.
Other Star Alliance possibility is IAD- YVR- HKG on AC.
If you prefer flying OneWorld carriers, try IAD- JFK- HKG on AA and CX.
Ryanair: never again!

How about some Round-the-world-trip on any given Alliance ? At least RTW´s on StarAlliance allow backtracking within a continent. So you could fly east via Europe to HGK, backtrack to
SIN and catch that SQ-A345 SIN - LAX or even SIN - EWR.
Alternatively fly via Southamerica (GIG/GRU) and Southafrica to SIN and onwards to HKG, then home either via Japan or even via New Zealand.
There is a downloadble tools for palnning RTW´s on www.staralliance.com (in the downloads section); however, the prices you have to obtain somewhere else ...

I would suggest ANA (NH)
IAD- NRT- HKG. Just as fast as UA, you'll get UA miles and really great service.
Need a Boeing 777 Firing Order....Further to fly....CI, MU, LX and LH 777s

I looked up flights on Orbitz using the test dates of Jul 8 and 15 (both fridays). Considering fare prices, airline / airline condition, services, ife, a/c, etc. I would go with
