Hello,

We all know of people who have gone from DCA-JFK for a meeting in NYC. Same like LHR-AMS or CDG. Have any of you done day trips (Round trip!) for FUN? and if so, what routes? and Who has flown the longest route for fun? I want to try to find cheap fares from WAS to ?(Anywhere) for the same day, or one day after, just to fly for fun. Its kind of wasteful, but ive saved the money and hey, the airlines need the business anyhow.... PLUS, I am an Enthusiast!  Wink If you know of a website that is good for these types of flights plz let me know! Thanks

Did GSO-SFO for the heck of it earlier this month. Was on an 0550 departure to CLT, with an 0825 connection to SFO, getting me in around 1045. Went into the city for about an hour, came back to the airport, and was on a 1400 departure to CLT, getting me into GSO at about 2345 that night. Came out to be 4758 miles flown in one day. Of course, the next day, I flew GSO-MCO-CVG-MHT for another 2032 miles (I could have flown the non-stop from GSO to BOS, which was only 645 miles...).

I’ve gone more places for lunch than you can count on both hands – well, feet, too – for no purpose other than I got a good deal and/or I want to see that place.

I was bored one weekend so I flew out on UA940 ORD-FRA, went to the observation deck for about three hours and took LH 432 FRA-ORD back. I was gone less than 24 hours. I was lucky enough to get business class on both flights, so it was a fun trip - but I was definitely tired when I finally got home.

When I worked at USAirways in Ithaca NY I'd go to NYC for lunch or dinner all the time. NOT a good benefit to have when you should be studying for school but friggin' awesome nonetheless.

When I worked for United at National Airport, and single, I would take dates up to New York for dinner on Friday or Saturday nights. Have them back in their dorms by the 1:00 am curfews. Kicks.

I did ATL-LGA, JFK-ZRH-JFK-ATL in about 24 hours a few years ago, walked off the aircraft, recleared security and checked in at the gate...50 mins later I was back on the same plane, 4 rows up from where I had been on the way over.

To the original question…

SAN-PHX-ELP-HOU/ground transfer/IAH-LGA-PWM in one day.

Back in 1997 – that was a blast – toes in the Pacific Ocean one night, toes in the Atlantic the next…

Back when I was with QH and the original PA, I did many day trips - MIA-TPA, MIA-SFO, MIA-SEA, MIA-DCA, etc. Sometimes I took along a non-airline date for dinner in SFO - Always boggled their minds when I picked them up at 0600 for a "dinner" date, but once they figured it out, they absolutely LOVED the concept.

When I first started working for Reno Air as a customer service agent I whisked my mom off on a day trip to Las Vegas. After seeing it was so easy, it became a regular for me. My wife (then girlfriend) and I flew to Portland one day to enjoy sales tax free shopping. I took a friend to Seattle for her birthday and another to Las Vegas. In fact, when I turned 21, I celebrated by taking my mom, dad, brother, his girlfriend and mine on a day trip to Seattle. I had my first legal drink on the plane, then followed it up with one at SEATAC.

I did temporary duty in Detroit and while there I took a day trip to New York City and another to Chicago. The day trip idea has lost its luster a little now, but I still manage to get one in there every so often, visiting friends in St. Louis and San Jose on occasion. Nonetheless, it's still great to know I can do it. And that's what makes this job so infectious! Sometimes working in the airline industry is like a disease, it brings you down some days but you just can't get rid of it! Once it's in your blood, it will last forever.

Sorrry, my daytrips for pleasure seem to be rather dull compared to some other posts ...
In the U.S.:

  • LAS - SAN - TUS - LAS on WN and HP

YX MCI-MKE-FLL-MKE-LGA-MKE-MCI, a true joyride, actually spent 15 minutes in the gift shop at LGA to prove I had done it and the trip was entirely free. Out at 0550 in at 2305.

I had a chance to fly with my buddy on AA as a D3 from ORD-CDG-ORD and crash in his hotel with him for the night and fly home. I just couldn't justify spending the money to fly to Europe for the day. I would want to spend as much time as possible. Maybe in the future if vacation allows.

Regards.

I flew on an Eastern Airlines L-1011 between PDX and SEA just for fun. I think I spent something like $55.00 round trip. Had lunch in the Seattle airport and returned a few hours later. I've also flown many times between Anchorage - Cordova, Cordova - Yakutat, Petersburg - Wrangell, Juneau - Gustavus, and Juneau - Ketchikan...all on Alaska Airlines, and all just for fun.

I'm trying to make it a goal to do at least one pointless day trip by air a year...

PHL-PIT-PHL in 2001 on a US A320 and MD-80...family member needed some miles and the fare was cheap so I tagged along...last time I was on a US MD-80 before they were retired...

PHL-PIT-PHL in 2002 on a US A330 and FL 717 (first A330 flight, first FL flight, and first 717 flight)

FLL-JFK-FLL in 2003 on a B6 A320 (first B6 flight, first Song flight, first visit to JFK by air, first and only time I saw the Concorde in service)

DEN-MSP-DEN in 2004 on an F9 A319 and 733...first and only F9 733 flight, first visit to Minnesota...spent the day at the famous Mall of America...

Where will my 2005 trip bring me? I have no clue!

I have to admit that I also enjoy partaking in this geeky hobby. Big grin

Just to give you some examples of my typical voyages, this year has already seen the following daytrips:

DTM-PMI-DTM
DUS-PMI-DTM
DUS-PMI-VLC-PMI-DUS

Already scheduled are these daytrips:

CGN-THF-DTM
DUS-BCN-BIO-BCN-DUS
CDG-EXT-CDG
DUS-MAN-DUS
DUS-FCO-DUS
AGP-BIO-AGP
DTM-THF-DUS
DUS-ZRH-DUS

Most of these trips cost less than 60 Euro/return, so it is even an inexpensive hobby.  Smile

Longest one:

BFI-PIE-ATL-EWR-OSL-CPH-ORD-SEA...51hrs straight, 35 of it in the air...
The SK folks in EWR were dumbfounded by checking in for ORD via OSL (then GEN)-CPH!

Doing IAH-BNA-IAH today in fact for the heck of it...in search of FDX ATRs...
