Hi,
Eastern Airways - www.easternairways.com - are offering a return flight from Inverness (UK) to Aberdeen (UK) for £267.70, travelling out today and back tomorrow.
Savings can be made by booking in advance - it drops to £157.
The journey time is 25 minutes - including taxi etc and the mileage, as the crow (or Jetsteam 31) flies is about 60 miles. Travelling today, that works out at £4.45 per mile, booking in advance it drops to £2.61 per mile.
By comparison the train takes 150 minutes and costs less that £20 and driving time is the same with similar costs.
Does anyone know of a more expensive trip - mile per mile?

Eastern do seem to be a high priced airliner, especially for the type of planes that they use, I did hear a rumor that they serve champagne on there flts, is that true, or am i just being stupid?????

I'm not going to do the math, but flights to/from Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard are extremely expensive, on a per/mile basis. LGA-ACK can easily run you as high as $700 in high season, for a USX flight that is in the 200-250 mile range.

I can't find the exact fare, but Papa Westray to Westray may well be the most expensive (also the world's shortest flight, of course) - somewhere around £14 per mile.

Air Southwest offer PLH-NQY and return for around £190 (their website appears to be down so I can't check), flying time can be as little as 10 minutes and is only around 40 miles each way. They call themselves a LCC, yet this is the cheapest fare they offer!

Eastern Airways is a business-orientated airline. I doubt many people on their flights would be paying their own fares. Good for the airline, of course, if they can earn a profit doing that.
Air Southwest can be very expensive (including on routes other than PLH-NQY), but then all airlines can. Remember that low-cost, no-frills does not necessarily mean low-fares. But it does, of course, completely or substantially erode the value-for-money element.

You are including taxes, fees and charges which are fixed costs. The picture would be clearer if these were removed and then the cost per mile calculated.

Quoting Trb10 (Reply 13): EXT-JER can be incredibly expensive if booked last minute £279.60 to be exact and thats only 25 mins too.....
Anything out of EXT is outrageous once you tack on EUR65.00 worth of taxes and fees !! Blimey.
I was looking at a BE fare BES-EXT-BES, EUR7.45 each way (probably GBP5.00) - fare total EUR87.00 with taxes and fees.
Now there is no way the company running EXT is charging BE EUR30.00 per passenger, so methinks BE is tacking on a hefty "fuel" (ie. this is our profit margin) surcharge. They can f.r.o.

Yeah, I was reading about that route in AIRWAYS magazine a while ago and that it is the shortest scheduled flight with a flight time of 1.5 minutes and on a day with good tail winds, can be done in about 60 seconds. Quite ridiculous for what they charge for the flight averaging to about 15 Pounds per mile when it is only 3-4 mile flight to start with.

That's nothing compared to PHL-LGA on US Airways Express. $662.90 round-trip for a 96-mile trip on Dash-8's or regional jets. Or PHL-ABE at $544.40 for the 55-mile trip.

Airlinerfreak -
That seemed a bit high to me. What airline did you check, and are you talking about 2 people?
I checked Qantas NS RT LAX-SYD on their web site, and for flights on Wednesdays, Jun 15 going, June 22 returning, got a first class fare of $13,836.68 for one person, which would be $27,673.36 for two people.
