I took my daughter on her first airline ride in 2001. We were boarding in coach on a America West A320 out of LAS to PHL. We were assigned the aisle & center seat, but since this was her first ever airline flight, I let her sit in the window seat until our 3rd seatmate show up. I asked her politely if my kid could have her window seat. She graciously agreed if she could have my aisle seat, which of course I gladly traded with her. This is the only time I've ever asked someone else to trade seats with me. And plus the fact I'll do anything for my little girl so she can have a good time & a memorable first flight. Regards.

Whenever a fellow PAX has asked me for my window seat, I've politely refused, and then had to endure the uncomfortableness of the rest of the flight. So no, I wouldn't ask somebody else for their seat... (Unless we were flying into Kai Tak[wet dream, nowadays], in which case I would happily strangle anyone sitting in the windowseat...)

Never, but I have offered to swap twice - once for an IAH-DEN flight which was severely overbooked and people were finding anywhere they could to sit, and I made way so a mother could sit with her young son; the other time was a pair of nervous fliers from STN-AMS on easyJet (unassigned seating) again so they could sit together.

Usually I always stick to the seat assigned to me:
- For shothauls I prefer the window seat
- for medium hauls I prefer the aisle seat. When travelling with company, recently we both asked for aisle seats ...
- Flying longhaul I prefer the window seat in Businessclass; if I really have to fly Eco, I prefer the aisle seat.

If the option is an aisle seat and the airport of destination is one that I have visited before I normally change. Like said, airline staff prefer an aisle seat!

I don't like the window seat, unless it's the A on the ERJ's. I like the aisle seat because I like to get up during the flight. If the flight is empty and I can get a three seat block, I will usually sit by the window, but only after the door is closed.
My last flight I spent a long time begging the gate agent for an aisle seat and she didn't have any. Resigned to fly for 6 hours and have to jump over or bother someone to get up, I boarded the plane, only to find out that the couple who had B-C had sat down on A-B.

The one time I have been asked to trade seats I was in seat E on a 767. I think the guy asking had an aisle, but this was on a DL 764, and I was in the exit row without a bulkhead! (32, i think?) Any other day I would have jumped at the chance to get out of the middle, but that is one seat I just couldn't trade out of!

Actually now I remember, very recently I was denied my seat. A foreign-language-speaking (to me) lady had my "A" seat and somehow couldn't find her boarding pass. Despite the best efforts of the F/A to get her to move, even they couldn't. So I ended up at the back of a 767 with no window. Still, all was not bad as I got to sit next to a rather pretty and friendly Central American girl!

Well, normally I would have stood my ground, but several mitigating circumstances (including the flight being late, me being the only person with English as their first language, and the large man sitting next to her) meant I was not unhappy to find another seat.

I was on my way back from India on my last leg NRT-YVR on JAL this last december. I had checked in early from the Hotel and gotten a window seat, upon boarding the aircraft however a Indian guy was sitting on in my seat, I politely showed him my boarding card and he looked up at me with a "WHAT??" expression. I tried to explain it to him that all these three window side seats were assigned to me and my both brothers while he just laughed shrugged and remained seated.
My younger brother went up to the F/A and nicely asked her to assist she came over with a smile and asked for his boarding pass which showed his assigned seat somewhere 10-12 rows behind us she pointed at the seat number and told him to go take his own seat (politely ofcourse) the guy got up and as the F/A left he went to the row in front of us and as he tried to take the window seat there I told him THAT was my mom's seat along with my dad's and my sister's, he was not happy i could tell as he moved to the next row and sat in the window seat. Eventually another pax cam - another indian gentleman - who was assigned that particular window seat, this guy was not nice and pretty much went off on him...
The F/A came back and was surprised that the guy was still causing problems and told him that he can either take his own seat or deplane. I didn't see the guy afterwards until after our arrival in YVR.

In Novermber of 2002 I was on NRT-DEL JAL (They flew the MD11's on this leg back then) I had the window seat as usual. A 12-13 yr old kid was sitting in the middle and I overheard him asking his dad if he could sit in the window seat, I switched with him and made his day...it was fun... both him and his dad had a lot of questions about planes, jet engines etc etc... the time went by very fast...

I have never asked. i hate being asked myself, because I always choose the window seat when flying. I have been asked a couple times. Both times I gave up the seat. I wasnt thrilled, but in both cases it was a couple traveling together and wanted to sit together.

This is different than just a window request. If I see a family trying to get together, I will happily offer to move, even if the family hasn't asked me, because I know firsthand what it is like to have your family split up, especially with little kids.
As for grown adults who just want a window, they get a quick "No," and I go back to looking out my prized window.
