My good friends are selling both their cars and moving to Auckland NZ. They are looking to go for 6 months. Leaving anytime in the first week of August and returning at the end of December or beginning of January. All the fare deals have maximum stay of like 30 days, can anyone help with a cheap airfare? LAX-AKL-LAX? How much is this gonna cost?

Traveling at xmas time is probably what is pushing the prices up. Dont know if its the same US-NZ/Australia as it is UK-NZ/Australia, but with it being the southern summer and people going home at Christmas then flights are usually packed and expensive, maybe it would be better (if at all possible) to look at other dates and see if the price difference makes it worthwhile changing dates

Does staying for 6+ mo. drive a ticket price up? I remember studying abroad for months at a time, but my arrangements were made through the university so I never was able to research a extended fare.

Yes, usually stays over 30 days (some tickets 90 days) drive the price up a lot. Try just under 6 months - if you are between 6 and 12 months that is usually the most expensive fare...
But obviously, as stated by others earlier, the dates are not ideal in terms of fares: August is high season, and so is December.
NZ had fantastic offers LAX-CHC and SFO-LAX, since both routings are new. They increase capacity SFO-AKL, so maybe you can find something cheaper from SFO rather than AKL?

Did I say if he flew out of LAX he would a have chance to fly the 777? NO! I think I said he if flew with NZ he could fly there new 777. You sound like a politician you change and manipulate others words and sentences. If you would post on the topic and not twist words you would see AA777jr, is looking for help on a ticket to AKL. The cheapest tickets right now are out of LAX not SFO.

Aa77jr, dont know if it is important to your friends, but if you go via US you get at least 64kg luggage allowence. If you book a thru tix from a regional airport, they have to honour the allowence as well. Although, if they are using a Dash or something similar, you may have to fly part of your luggage up the day before, check with the connecting airline.
Going for that amount of time, it could be worth it.
I flew via LAX once because I wanted the extra allowence. That would be the only reason to fly thru LAX, as we got off plane, huddled into room, and told to wait, then the called each NZ flight as it was ready to go. Not an experience that I want to purposely repeat, unless I needed the extra kilos.

And I recommend going back to what *I* said, before complaining! I said for the flight options you have given it is unlikely
