I am looking into going to Sydney in January 2006 for my 14th birthday. I was wondering if anybody has flown from NYC to Sydney and has any suggestions on what routes to take or the cheapest way of going. Thanks!

When I choose I flight I decide by looking at the airline, a/c, layover opportunities, etc. I pick the one with the most things I haven't experienced. Concerning price, there usually isn't more than a couple of hundred dollars difference in different carriers, so I don't consider that...usually.

Use your local internet airfare sites!
Often, not always, the cheapest routing (at least from SYD) is via Asia. Supriseingly, at one time I found the cheapest Y fare was QF to NRT/AA to NYC combo. Was several hundred $A cheaper than QF direct to NYC. KE, OZ, JL, NH are also possiabilities. Of course this routing is somewhat longer than via LAX,3-4 hours extra flying, plus connecting time, which maybe longer than at LAX

Buy a ticket on B6 to LGB for 299 R/T and then you can buy a ticket on Qantas for 799 R/t Usually so with a taxi ride you are looking at $1220 or so as long as you fly Qanatas off peak months.

If I were you I'd go JFK-LAX on whatever airline has the cheapest fare on that route, than fly Qantas from LAX to SYD. I've found the overall price is usually cheaper if you fly direct to SYD rather than a stopover in HKG or something which would be like 12 hrs at least.

your picking the peak time to travel to Sydney do it's going to be more expensive, i did in with UA in business class a few weeks back...it's one hell of a tiring journey in the east-west direction, had a 1hr 30min layover at LAX then it was off again. done it on both QF and UA and i found UA to be cheaper and better service.

Quoting 1MillionFlyer (Reply 13): I think off peak is usally our spring and summer (their fall and winter)
I saw those prices in April/May this year
In late August I am finding:
LGA-LAX $301 on NWA
LAX-SYD $1021 on Qantas
So $1322
buying direct NYC (All airports) to SYD is pricing as: $1370 so you don't save much this time of the year
ok i have checked with Qantas for Jan 2006 and all of the cheap fares are gone because it's our summer, meaning its the most $$$$ time of the year to come here! the cheapest you will get with Qantas for then is $2179, they do have some better specials but they are good for travel until 8 dec only! you left it a little late i'd think because the cheap fares usually get snapped up very fast.
