Europe To Taipei: CI, CX, TG Or BR?

I need to travel from Germany to Taipei in October. It will be a mad dash with just two days or so at TPE for a meeting.

I will only be paid an eco ticket and the choices I have are CI, CX, TG and maybe BR.

- CI is the only nonstop from FRA with a A340-300.
- CX would be via CLK on a B747.
- TG would be via BKK on a B747.

How do these options compare regarding travel comfort, in flight service and in flight entertainment ? Usually travelling on EK to Asia and Australia, I have only tried CX in the past and was not overly impressed by their B747, to be honest.

One other thing I have to consider is the FFP. CX would give me miles for the ExecClub, TG for miles&more. Can one collect miles on CI for one of the more popular European FFPs or only for their own programme ? According to their website, this does not seem to be the case.

The obvious bonus for CI is the nonstop flight which saves some time, although travelling in Y I don't mind a one-stop to get some blood into my legs again.... OTOH, no frequent flyer miles and no domestic connection in Germany.

Any recommendations ?

Which cabin? If you are collecting BA Exec Miles this will be next to nothing if in Y on CX. Regardless of that I'd go with CX, for entrance to the Pier alone!

CI´s nonstop FRA - TPE runs at convenient times:
CI 62 11:20 07:00 Frankfurt FRA Taipei TPE
CI 61 22:10 05:50 Taipei TPE Frankfurt FRA

The negative part is that the flight from TPE to FRA is scheduled with 13.40h duration ...

On the other hand, it is typhoon season in SE-Asia and that means, that if you were to connect through HKG (on CX) , you would have two more chances to get stranded at HKG due to weather (this can be a positive or a negative thing  Smile ).

TG via BKK: Is a good option as the longer flight will become shorter, but BKK - TPE is about 3.40h (only in case you don´t get a flight that will also call at HKG !).
While the return to FRA has potential for a day-flight flight as
TG 637 09:00 11:40 Taipei TPE Bangkok BKK
TG 922 12:45 19:00 Bangkok BKK Frankfurt FRA
the segment FRA - TPE will arrive in the evening at best.

In case you are able to sleep in Eco-class I´d go for the CI flight; TG or CX only if you want to collect miles.

Playing around with the CRS, Expedia has come up with an interesting LH/SQ fare with all flights being operated by SQ aircraft.

FRA-SIN-FRA B747-400
SIN-TPE-SIN B777-200/300

Total flight time is 18hrs compared to 14hrs on the nonstop with CI and it would give me an extra night in a TPE hotel bed rather than in an eco seat (flight leaves TPE early in the morning and arrives at FRA in the evening, rather than most other flights that depart TPE in the evening and arrive at FRA on the next day's morning).

you can get this also on TG:
TG 637 09:00 11:40 Taipei TPE Bangkok BKK
TG 922 12:45 19:00 Bangkok BKK Frankfurt FRA

Do you already have specific days for October ?

Well, I need to be back in Germany on Oct 16, either on the morning or the late afternoon. Departure from Germany cannot be sooner than on Oct. 10. Business-wise, it would do if I would leave on Oct. 12, but I might add a day or two for sightseeing.

Thanks for the help so far.

Has anybody travelled on China Airlines ?

Could you be paid a Premium Eco ticket and use BR Evergreen de Luxe Class?

Prices are usually quite competitive (a little more expensive than normal eco, but not so much), and the comfort is excellent (even if the cabin and IFE are a little outdated). Seat pitch 38", great recline and 8 abreast in a 744 (and in most of the planes the Evergreen de Luxe is in the nose, very silent.

The drawback is it is offered only on the 744, so you have to fly through CDG, LHR or AMS.

The CDG-TPE is a non stop flight, but runs 3 times a week only.

Avoid 777 with 3-4-3 config in Y ! They are real sardine cans. (AF/KL for example)

I´ve flown CI about 2 years ago HKG - BKK - HKG using a MD11 and B744. Seat pitch in Y on the MD11 (in Mandarin livery) was generous (and I´m 192cm tall); for the B744 I can´t recall.

Relatives as well as a collegue of mine fly CI regularly AMS - BKK (on a B744) but they are no reliable source for opinions.
