What Are Your Thoughts On Monarch?

Hello,

we have flown with monarch everytime we have been to menorca which is 7 times now and I cant fault this airline, the foods great the cabin crew were remarkably friendly and may I add fit!

I would like to here your views about this airline?

I have flown Monarch a few times, not the best airline I have flown on but certainly not the worst. I have to give them credit for their livery though, its one of the best around!  bigthumbsup

I flew with them back in the 80s when they had just received their 752s (G-MONC) to SZG a couple of times.

I have to say I enjoyed it (as it was my first time on a 752) and as has been said above their livery is just great.

One thing I can say about Monarch is that they are the longest established UK charter airline that is still owned and run by the same people. Whilst Monarch has been flying, great names in UK Civil Aviation have been and gone, which must prove that they have been successful. I flew with Monarch in the 1970s when they were flying BAC1-11s and 720s, the latter to St Lucia from LTN! The 720 was designed for short haul and it was very uncomfortable for long flights but the smiling and efficient Monarch cabin crew compensated for the discomfort and inconvenience of having to refuel en route. Monarch was one of the first UK charter airlines that invested in new efficient aircraft. They were one of the first European airlines to take delivery of the 757, when the competition was still relying on old jets.

I regularly flew Monarch between 1998 and 2004, either to AGP or LPA. Whilst the seat pitch was rather restricted (no more so than other charter airlines), I rarely experienced any delays and always found the Monarch crew courteous, efficient and professional. Monarch always used to offer a hot meal that was, for airline food, perfectly adequate. Breakfast was always omelettes (or overcooked scrambled egg?), sausage, mushrooms and hash browns, with fruit juice, rolls and preserves. Lunch and dinner were 3-courses with tea/coffee and there was always a pay bar service. Hot towels were handed out and free newspapers provided. IFE was rather poor, drop down screens and usually TV comedies, but who wants to watch a film on a flight 2-4 hours?

Sadly, in line with market trends, they have recently reduced meal services and any meal now has to be booked in advanced and paid for.

In July 2002 I was unable to book Monarch as they had no seats left on my date of outward travel so I flew My Travel instead. Compared to Monarch, My Travel were appallingly bad so I paid extra to get a seat on Monarch on the return leg and it was worth the extra. Recently I have found BA cheaper than Monarch, so I have flown BA (or rather GB Airways) instead. Seat pitch was better and the free bar service were the only advantages over Monarch but given the choice I would prefer Monarch, which for some reason feels like my "home" airline.

They have excellent service & flight attendants, but the only problem is that the seats are so narrow & so close from each other .

Going on with what BCAL said I have heard that my travel are not much cop! Also I was surprised to hear on a different forum that some one had just come back from Spain and they were fed for free don't know if that's a new thing but we flew last year and it cost us around a tenner.

Because I am interested in holiday airlines I thought I would email monarch to see if they would send me something and i was really pleased they sent me a folder with CD rom that had info on the history, fleet listings, routes, food on board etc, also they sent me two free pens, and two car stickers a timetable and what really topped it off they gave me a free model plane Boeing 757-200!

I have flown with Monarch a few times now and I have to say, its been briliant everytime, I feel at 'home' with them, and the food, well its better than the what you get servered at takeaways these days!

Monarch = 10/10,

I will say though that there fleet needs a 're-think'!,

A300-600
B767-300
A330
B757-200
A320
A321

(I cant think if they have any others......)

scrap the Airbuses, get more 757's and 767's, they do exactly what they say on the tin........

It's true that their fleet is not overly streamlined... the A320s have CFM56 while the A321s have IAE V2500... hmm.

That aside I love Monarch! I've been on them many times and their service has been as good as or better than more than a few legacies I have been on. Their old colours were great, their new colours are brilliant! Plus they are the original UK holiday/charter airline with roots as far back as the 60s(?).

Not quite correct, as Britannia was flying before Monarch although Britannia is now rebranded and German-owned so Monarch is the original UK holiday/charter airline still operating under their original name and owned by the same people.

I think monarch should get some 787s and scrap there airbuses like there rivals first choice they have sum 787s on order i believe. or they could get sum a340s. i personally have travelled monarch loads of times i remember a flight to lanzorote we few on a a300-600r reg g-mons it had had a recent spray job but the inside was falling apart the over head lockers the cabin staff had a problem closing, the head set sockets were abit dodgy but it was fun!

No chance at all that the company is going to discard the airbus fleet. You will see an expansion on the A320/A321 side and maybe another longhaul aircraft. Maybe in a few years time they will replace the A300 with something else.

You don't want a fleet of only 757/767 because they are getting very old. A A321 does almost the same job ( not range wise) and uses a lot less fuel than a 757. 757's are geting old and maybe fased out over the next couple of years. Maybe replaced by newer 757's or A321's. It all depends on the market. For the scheduled side of the company the A321 is a better aircraft.

Just my opinion, but Monarch aren't all that great - after all; everything is payable onboard, they don't have an in-flight magazine anymore, the A330 Premium Service is appalling with only 34" Pitch with fabric seats compared to MyTravel and First Choice's 36" Leather Seats! Additionally; on their A330s; their are no PTVs in Economy which there are, as standard on MyTravel, First Choice and Thomas Cook. Do Monarch still make you pay to rent head phones?

All passenger's travelling with MyTravel Group receive a FREE, award winning in-flight meal unless on a late deal, Sun/Snowdeal or Star Buy in which case it is £10pp. Compare this to Thomson's £15pp charge from next Summer! :O

Just my opinion, but if your looking for a descent Charter airline, then fly with MyTravel, First Choice or Thomas Cook. There is also talk of MyTravel upgrading their A330's up to or above the standard First Choice's new cabins from the Winter.

Before you start commenting on an airline please make sure you have got the correct data!!
The last time i flew Monarch we still had an inflight magazine.

Yes, on our scheduled flights you have to pay for a meal. But 5 pounds for a complete meal is better value than you get with other airlines where you have to pay for your food. Food on charter services is free on even on those you have got an inflight magazine.

On our scheduled service you receive a free newspaper. not many airlines which give a free newspaper these days.

Finally i have to agree that a cabin upgrade would be nice.

Saw i your profile that you want to be a pilot. i hope for you it qorks out. And once you are working in this industry you will find out how it exactly works. And in general terms you get what you pay for. There is a reason why most scheduled airlines make the passengers pay for food. Due to this strategy the airline isable to reduce the ticket price and therefore able to compete with the LCC. As you have seen in the last couple of years the public votes with it's wallet and therefore choosing the cheapest ticket they can get. And afterwards complaining about the service. But that they fly for 20 pounds return LGW-ALC while a train ticket LGW-MAN is 40 pounds, doesn't matter. On the train within the UK you pay a higher fare and also here you don't get a free meal.
