I'm planning a trip from TUS to ROM this fall. It looks like my options are AA/SN (TUS-ORD-BRU-FCO M80/763/319) or BA (PHX-LHR-FCO 744/757), both coach. Any concrete preferences about service/equipment or general words of advice?

BA from PHX would require only 1 transfer, but that one would be in LHR (something I personally would not recommend unless you have plenty of time).
Also you would have to drive up north to PHX from Tucson adding 1.5-2h to your total travel time - personally I love to fly into and out of TUS as it is a very easily to navigate airport and I like the people´s attire.
AA (or UA/LH) via ORD: I would prefer to connect in DEN !

I wouldn't be too fussed about LHR, if it is one connection in LHR vs two elsewhere I'd still go with BA. The PHX flight gets in around 1pm which is a quiet time for international arrivals in Terminal 4.
I'm biased as a predominantly BA flyer but think that in coach it is all much of a muchness either way, only when you get to premium cabins is it worthwhile swapping airlines/routes for a better product.

Yeah you won't get a PTV on the 763 (don't know if you care or not) but the reason I would go on BA is that you'll have RB211s all the way! 744 and the increasingly hard to get BA 752. Go with that for sure. Better service and fewer stops as well. Would be a no brainer for me.
