I am looking to go to Sydney, Oz for Christmas and New Year. I flew KL and MH last year it cost a total of £825 (approx €1155 / $1500), departing 12/12/04 returning 04/01/05. My dates are flexible by a week either side of these.

Does anybody know of any cheaper airlines without compromising on safety!

Cheers.

My Dad goes to AUS every few years, and he flys:-

EDI-LHR BD

LHR-SIN SQ

SIN-PER SQ

And he does it for £690.

Although it is a travel agent he goes to in Edinburgh.

Thanks
Mike

The most direct option would be EK.

Normally their online fares booked direct on their website are OK.
Worthwhile checking out.

Gulf Air might be another option...

Wow - US$1500 is a bargain. From the west coast of the US it's typically US$1600 - $1800 for those dates - and the flight's shorter! Must be something to do with better competition!

You'll probably find roundtrip to be really expensive for those dates. I have found that if you book one way to aus, then buy a return from an australian travel agent it works out to be cheaper. But I'm not sure about from the UK.

As other have said, EK of Gulf Air might be cheapest. Lauda/Austrian I know typically have cheap deals on that run - particularly one-way. Failing that, KE or JAL sometimes have cheapies.

I'd also wait a few months - late Sep / early Oct I think some cheaper fares become available.

Fly Emirates GLA-DXB-SYD
Quick, cheap and most importantly, it avoids the hell hole known as LHR.

A quick search shows that currently the cheapest fare is with Gulf Air and there are seats available on both dates. Flights from GLA to LHR will be operated by bmi and LHR/BAH/SYD with Gulf Air. Fare including taxes £1,037.

BA on the same date is £1,315.

Fares to Oz during Christmas have been creeping up since July, obviously as demand is beginning to equate with supply. I do not think you will find any bargains if you hold on until October.

I think I'll have to tell my other half to forget this Christmas and hold off until next year!

Are Gulf Air on par with KLM, Malaysia and the like?

When would be the ideal time to book flights for December 2006?

The reason it costs so much is because it is the Summer Holidays for AUS and Christams for us. If you were to go somewhere around March the price would dramatically drop.

For 3 weeks in March: £720

and your dates: £1310

Thanks
Mike

Have you tried TRAILFINDERS travel agency in the UK? They should be able to give you better answers than here!

I am not too sure. Many a.net members are better than some travel agents! I was recently informed by a Trailfinders agent that you could only fly BA/QF between the UK and Australia - if you wanted to fly SQ, EK or any other airlines, you had to stopover for a minimum of 24 hours en route!

Hi,

You could try Air France around those dates, as they will do you a regional connection to CDG, then CDG to SIN on their 777-300ER. You should then be able to get a Qantas flight to SYD as they have a code share agreement with them.

I'm off to Melbourne for a month at the start of January, and I was given the option of going from SIN to SYD, and then taking a regional connection with Qantas.

Hope this helps, and I'm paying £810 all in. It was the best deal I could get considering it is still a high season booking.

Hope you get something.

Tony.
