Hello everybody!

As I already mentioned before I'll be flying STR-LPA on nov 20 with Condor.

Arrival at LPA will be at 18:25.

I want to connect with IB for MAD which leaves at 19:45. Is that do-able? Anybody already been at that airport? Iberia mentions a boarding deadline of 45 minutes, so without any lugguage and a online boarding card printed out, would you take the risk?
I will be traveling on a Web-Fare, so, in case I miss my flight, do you think that IB is likely to rebook me on the 2:30 am flight that night so that I don't miss my other flights in MAD (see below)?
Just wanted your opinion if you would take the risk or not. Else I would have to stay one night in LPA and the whole trip would last 24 hours longer, because I really want to take that A340-Flight.
By the way, anybody knows which type of A340 will operate that flight today (-600?).

I would then arrive at 23:20 in MAD. Is it possible to stay the night there with a valid ticket?

On the next day I have two options. I could fly with IB762 to PMI for 23 Euros, which is a great price. Maybe it get even cheaper if I would buy a oneway-ticket LPA-PMI via MAD (because of less taxes maybe?). What do you think?
I could also pay like 15 Euros more and take Air Europa, which would be my first time and change from 2 Iberia flights. What would you recommend? What to expect on IB/Air Europa concerning IFE and catering?

Then I would fly with AB form PMI to BSL/MLH. If I tae the IB-Flight from MAD to PMI I will habe like 2,5 hours in PMI, which should be plenty enough.

I could also fly from MAD directly to BSL/MLH with Easyjet for 35 €. I would safe some 25 €, but I think it is worth to fly over PMI.

So I think I will fly the following:
nov 20:
STR-LPA on Condor
LPA-MAD on Iberia
nov 21:
MAD-PMI on Iberia
PMI-MLH on Air Berlin

I would really love to read your comments and what would you choose and why. I never been to Spain before, and never flown one of those carriers.

Thanks for your help

Reifel

Reifel,

Why don't you fly MAD-(PMI)-MLH on AB all the way ?

Since PMI is their Spanish hub, you might be able to get a good deal fare-wise  idea

Absolutely yes.

Quoting Reifel (Thread starter):

It's not a huge airport. There's only 1 terminal with a very simple layout so no chance to get lost there. Maximum distance between gates is about 500 meters (1600 ft) which is the total length of the terminal building.

I don't see why not, unless Condor had a bad reputation punctuality-wise and there was a big risk of your flight arriving at LPA with a big delay (leaving you with little or no time for your connection), and I don't think that's the case here.

No, I'm afraid. Webfares are the ones with most restrictions.

Quoting Reifel (Thread starter):

Lucky you!!.

Iberia's website shows an A340-600 for flight IB813 on November 20th (LPA-MAD at 19:45).

Eh? a valid ticket for what?...sorry I don't understand what you mean.

Don't forget taxes (€5,44 for this flight) and ticket issuing charges (€12,00 for an e-ticket which is the cheapest option). The total price for this flight is €40,44 (not bad either).

Thanks for you replies!

MH017, I thought taking AB all the way, some times i could even get a AB-flight operated by Air Berlin, which will change from only flying AB! But on that day it will cost approx. 70 € with AB via PMI, so I prefer taking IB and AB and saving a few euros.

Iberia747, thanks a lot for your detailled answers.
LPA sounds good. I think I'll take the risk. Iberia quotes that with a selfprinted boarding pass I could even just show up at the gate at LPA, leaving me some more spare time too. I don't think that STR and LPA are quite dangerous for delays also, so Condor should make in on time hopefully.

The A340-600 sounds great! I first wanted to fly Binter to TFN and then take a 747, but the idea flying the 346 sounds much better to me! It would be my second time ever on an A340 (first one on AC) and first time on an A340-600 ever.

What to expect on that flight? Is Iberia still serving food for free? What about Movies/IFE/PTV as the flight is quite short?

Valid ticket, well I meant, is it possible to stay overnight at Bajaras in the Terminal if one has a airline ticket for the next day.

Did you ever took Air Europa? I'm still not sure if I should do IB again from MAD to PMI? What to expect on that sector concerning food etc? and what to expect from Air Europa?

You're right, I forgot taxes... Those are incredibly cheap in Spain. You know what is funny? If you book on expedia.fr for instance, you also get the IB-webfare, and you have only 8€ of service fee... And if you book the whole trip LPA-MAD-PMI on one ticket, you pay just once.

I don't care anyway. I'm in Ukraine for the next month... I found a travel agency who can issue me the ticket for the same price, without any fee, as they are not common here. So I'll do that.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Quoting Reifel (Reply 3):

Nope. Iberia doesn't offer any free food/beverages on flights shorter than 4 hours. You will have to pay if you want to have something to eat/drink.

Quoting Reifel (Reply 3):
What about Movies/IFE/PTV as the flight is quite short?

IB doesn't have PTVs in economy class. On the A340-600 economy class cabin there are LCD screens (hanging from the cabin ceiling) and the normal programs for domestic/European flights are candid camera shows and short clips about sports, fashion, jet-set, tourism in Spain...etc. All this is shown without audio so no headsets are offered.

Flight info is also displayed on the screens when there's no program being shown.

Quoting Reifel (Reply 3):

Ah...now I understand.

Well, some people stay there overnight. I have seen many people sleeping on seats after midnight with their luggage so I don't think it should be a problem.

The only thing is that someone could steal your things while you're sleeping...but this can happen at any airport.

The last flight out of MAD at night departs around 02:00 a.m. and the first arrivals start at about 5:00 a.m., so the activity there doesn't stop and there's always people inside the terminals during the night. There are also European flights that depart around 6:00 a.m. so the check in counters open at 4:00 a.m. for those flights.

Quoting Reifel (Reply 3):
Did you ever took Air Europa?

Nope.

Quoting Reifel (Reply 3):
I'm still not sure if I should do IB again from MAD to PMI?

I would take Air Europa. This way you would try 2 different Spanish airlines on the same trip.

Quoting Reifel (Reply 3):
What to expect on that sector concerning food etc?

Food/drinks for purchase again (same thing for IB/UX).

Quoting Reifel (Reply 3):
and what to expect from Air Europa?

Nothing special. Normal, "average" airline. Modern aircraft (B737-800) and you could be lucky to get the new leather seats which look very nice.

Anyway, not much to expect on a 55 minute flight.

I think I'll stay with IB for the MDI-PMI leg. Air Europa costs some 20 € more that I don't want to spend.

I heard that IB serves no free food anymore, and therefore it sounded really strange to me that CRS show "Dinner" on the LPA-MAD leg and "snack" on the MAD-PMI. Normally they should show "food for purchase", shouldn't they? Not really customer friendly...

Yes I've heard that before. There must be an error because if you look for those flights on www.iberia.com then you'll see a different thing....no free food on those flights.

Well I saw that on expedia.fr, maybe infos are posted wrong in different CRS, I don't know.

I finally changed my plans for the flight back. I used skyscanner to see where one can fly loco/charter from MAD to and where from STR/BSL/FRA, to find out where theorically it would be able to change planes... Jerez/Alicante etc sounded good too, and especially IBZ with a 19 Euro flight from MAD to IBZ. But the flights to Germany where either to expensive or too early/late or both.

So I stayed for switching at PMI. The cheapest option, flying IB to PMI and then AB to BSL bothered me because I could easily miss my last train at BSL to get home. So I looked for STR again. I found a 73 Euro offer (all included) from MAD to STR via PMI with Air Berlin. Interestingly the second leg (PMI-STR) is operated by HF, so I didn't hesitated. Also this would give me a "guarantee to be rebooked" if the connection should get tight at PMI (which is rather unlikely but who knows). And I also booked all the other flights, including the IB flight on the A340. The whole flights cost were approx. 170 € which I think is fair considering one gets a medium-haul flight and an A340-600 experience.

If you're interested, this will be the schedule:

November 20, 2005:
STR-LPA, 14:55 - 18:25, DE 7836, B757-300
LPA-MAD, 19:45 - 23:20, IB 813, A340-600

November 21, 2005:
MAD-PMI, 12:55 - 14:10, AB7745, B737-400
PMI-STR, 15:30 - 17:25, AB2381 (operated by Hapagfly HF1402), equipment unknown

Very interesting is the fact that with AB after the booking one is able to reserve a seat for 8€ per leg.
Of course this is nothing new, but actually one can see which seats are still free BEFORE paying and selecting a seat. On the MAD-PMI leg operated by AB almost everything was free. On the PMI-STR leg, operated by HF, only 5 or 6 were free, so I suppose the seats allocated to AB are rather restricted.

You might consider AB Top Bonus program  idea  ; think it's the only LCC actually having a FF program  Wink for the requirements, check AB web, sometimes they have good promotions and even offer a free flight after accumulating 15000 miles  veryhappy  . Doubt if HF is included in the scheme, though, but I'm sure Niki is  Smile
