I'm planning a trip to Copenhagen, Oslo, Helsinki or Stockholm, which of these cities do you prefer (which is best)?

I will probably fly SAS to CPH,OSL and ARN and AY to HEL!

Also which airport is better, I've heard HEL is nice and OSL is pretty new!

Thanks

Rob!  Smile

I went on a cruise last month and went to all 4 places. Personally I will rank them in this order:-

1. Stockholm
2. Copenhangen
3. Helsinki
4. Oslo

Yeah, that's about right IMO. Copenhagen is a little cheaper than Stockholm, though. And steer clear of Oslo, it's supposed to tied in second place with Zürich for the worlds most expensive city. Pizzas are astronomically expensive...

Sure, we're concerned for our lives. Just not as concerned as saving 9 bucks on a roundtrip to Ft. Myers.

Ranked by airport Stockholm has the lowest ranking among these cities.
Small, narrow checkin area and old style transithall with limited number of shops. Copenhagen is the number one airport in my opinion and if you choose Oslo you will be allowed to visit the DutyFreeStore due Norways is non-EU.

Welcome to the North!

I quite like OSL, one of my fave airports ... the only catch is that it is so far from the city and the express train into the city costs an arm and a leg.

Actually everything in Oslo costs an arm and a leg. Beautiful city though.

I like Copenhagen and Helsinki as well ... Helsinki has that Russian feel to everything. Loooooooooove the city bikes in Copenhagen ...

It depends on what terminal you're flying from and when you're flying. The check-in for SAS and Star Alliance in terminal 5 is extremely crowded during rush hours, but if you're checking in around 11 AM, it's almost empty and there's plenty of space there.

Terminal 2 is much better. It's quite modern, very small, almost never crowded, and a very short way to walk from the bus to the check-in to the security control to the gate. If you arrive 40 minutes before your flight departs, you've got plenty of time. Oneworld, LX, TP and a few LCC are in terminal 2. There are several flights to OSL, CPH and HEL there.

I just can't get over SK's staff at ARN. I was flying SK from ORD via ARN to MMX, and as the good old 763 was late coming into ARN, so I had about ten minutes recheck my luggage, get another boarding pass, and get to my next flight. Of course I didn't.

When I got to the SK check-in area, the agent at the desk said that I should have left the luggage and gone directly to the gate. Since I had tickets printed out by UA at BNA the day before, she assumed that I had come into ARN on UA, and therefore there was nothing she could do to get me on another flight. "You'll have to go the the UA check-in desk, and they will sort it out," she said slightly annoyed. I then explained to her that UA does not have any check-in desks at ARN, since they DON'T FLY HERE! Then she examined my ticket and saw the SK flight number. "You should have gotten a new ticket from SK at Chicago," I was amazed at this...

So, she decided that she had no choice but to put me on the next flight to MMX. So when I got the boarding pass, along with a new ticket, I noticed that it said LLA. But in the end it all worked out and I got a few hours later. Somehow, my luggage seemed to have been left at ARN though...

Just one more example of hwo little airline employees know. I've met a lot of SK staff at ARN also who are pretty clueless about many things. The other day in terminal 5, I heard an SK person tell some passengers that Alitalia is flying from terminal 2, while the truth is that AZ is in fact flying from terminal 5, the same as SK.

Hi everyone  Smile

I've been to Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen and all three cities are beautiful. So far I've never been to Helsinki, but I've been to St.Petersburg and Iceland), probably I could have been a Viking on my previous life eheheheh...  Silly

Talkin' 'bout cities:
1) Stockholm
2) Copenhagen
3) Oslo

Airports:
1) Copenhagen (I've been there many times, transit are smoother than anywhere else, very nice terminals and plenty of duty free!)
2) Stockholm
3) Oslo

The same thing happened to me! When I traveled ARN-MXP back in '99 I had a codeshare flight AZ/AY operated by Finnair. When I asked from which terminal Alitalia does operate, a SK employee told me Terminal 2. Later I discovered that it was Terminal 5. It took me 20 minutes to walk from T2 to T5 with all my baggage and I almost went late for check-in.

I've been to all those cities and I'd say:

1) Stockholm
2) Copenhagen
3) Helsinki (interesting is the possibility of day tour (3 hours with the boat) to Tallin which is very very nice!)
4) Oslo

Include Bergen? Do you include Philadelphia when talking about New York?

I'd have to agree (more or less) with others and say:

Joint 1st - Stockholm & Copenhagen. I think they're both really nice cities. Gamla Stan in Stockholm is beautiful! However I think that Copenhagen has a lot going for it too, and the area around Nyhavn is really nice.

3rd has to be Helsinki, although it's a nice city and the harbour and its islands are great, it just can't compete with Stockholm and Copenhagen IMHO.

4th, sadly, has to be Oslo. I don't think it represents the rest of Norway in any way, shape or form (apart from maybe on how unreasonably expensive everything is!). I love Norway and have seen some of the most beautiful sights I've ever seen there, but unfortunately I was bored with Oslo after about 2 hours.

In terms of airports, I think probably OSL and HEL get joint 1st place for me. Just beware of everyone nipping around on scooters at OSL (and I mean the staff, not the pax!) - one of these days they'll knock someone flying!!
