And I am just wondering where you would go. I live 3 hours from both DTW and ORD. What should I bring besides a camera, food, notepad...etc...there was also a site I was looking for that had spotting "spots" for just about any US airport, anyone got it? Thanks!

Unfortunately I´ve used bot airports as a connecting pax only and therefore I´m unaware of spotting opportunities, but Google found me http://www.planespotting.com

Of course the equipment you´ll need depends on your intentions (look only, scribble down regs, shoot photos, ...).
In case you want to shoot photos, you might want to bring along a small step ladder in order to shoot photos over the fence. Caution: But make sure upfront that it´s okay under local laws to use it !!!!
Powerful binoculars are always useful.
A timetable for the airport ?
