Ok, it's Friday in the afternoon and I need to kill some time before heading home from work, so I wanted to know what you though were the best (or your favorite) airport names.

Personally, mine would be:

- BOG - El Dorado. I like the name because it has a mythic background.
- FLR - Americo Vespucci. I like it 'cause America (the continent) was supposedly named after him.
- GDN - Lech Walesa. Truly a Polish hero.
- CDG - Charles de Gaulle. Another hero.
- MZL - La Nubia. Not sure what it means, but I like the name.

So what are your favorite airport names?

Thats a good one.

I like BAQ -- The Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport, because it was the first South American airport and instead of a typical historic liberator or martir, owes its name to one of the pioneers of Colombian aviation, which lead to the creation of Scadta (now Avianca).

Slightly off topic, but I rate Bush (IAH) and Reagan (DCA) as the two worst.

Houston Intercontinental Airport was one of the coolest airport names until they stuck in the name of someone who, IMHO, is not worthy.

Isn't El Alto the town where the airport is? AFAIK the name of the airport is John F Kennedy Int'l, named after his investment plan in Latin America (as is named a neighborhood in Bogota).

LGA is named after former New York mayor Fiorello LaGuardia.. definately Italian.  Wink

And I also vote for DCA having the worst name. It'll always be just National to me. Big grin

That at IAH... it'll always be Intercontinental. No need to ruin the name of a perfectly good airport  Wink

As far as I know "nubia" is not a word in Spanish. "Nube," however, means "cloud" and I would guess they're related since this seems appropriate for an airport name.

Very appropiate having in mind that MZL is one of the highest airports in Colombia and it is located on the top of a mountain. (About 6,000 feet)

But the real story is that it was the name of the farm or hacienda "La Nubia" where it was the built the airport in 1956.
