Hey!

All I've ever wanted to do is just book a flight out to any place, then catch the next flight back. Just for the thrill of flying.

Now I know a lot of you out there would have done this, so what flight's have you taken in one day and back for fun?

At the moment I'm looking into LGW-AMS with easyjet.

But in the past I've done...

I have taken many same-day return flights within Europe, mostly I stayed at the airport for spotting or I visited the city before flying back home.

I had also the luck to be on many flights were I spend the whole time on the cockpit jumpseat, basically I stayed 30 minutes at the destination airport before flying back on the same plane with the same crew, I did it just for the sake of flying and it was perfect to kill time on boring weekends.

The best was a FRA-JFK flight on Singapore Airlines on a Saturday morning with the return flight in the evening of the same day. My girlfriend, two other friends and myself spent a day in Manhattan for shopping and sightseeing and then we went back to the airport to catch the flight back to FRA. Every person who heard about this crazy trip said that we are completely nuts (which is actually very correct Big grin).

Not necessarily just for the fun of flying, but in taking a daytrip to Nashville a couple summers ago to visit some friends I specifically picked the flights: on US Airways, and got 2 new planes: EMB170, ERJ145; and a new airport for me: DCA. Left BDL at 6:40am and got back around 11pm, was a fun trip Smile

Last week I did a quick ML and flew from MSP-MEM-PHX and back in one day. Spent only about an hour at PHX. I've flown into LGW a few times only to spend the day in London and then fly to DUB later that evening for my end destination. This spring I went MSP-SFO for the day. Had a nice day in San Fran and took the red-eye back.

These are day trips I made for spotting and short city visits:

AMS-LHR with KLM and LHR-AMS with Kenya Airways
MST-AMS v.v. with KLM exel
MST-STN v.v. with KLM exel
EIN-AMS v.v. with KLM exel
EIN-HAM v.v. with Metropolis
ANR-AMS v.v. with KLM exel
BRU-LHR v.v. with Virgin Express
DUS-TXL v.v. with Deutsche BA
VLC-CDG v.v. with Vueling
VLC-SVQ v.v. with Vueling
VLC-PMI v.v. with Air Europa

And, although it was for work, I very much enjoyed the numerous day trips out of Valencia on Air Nostrum flights. Also international routes such as BCN-TRN, BCN-NCE, MAD-TLS and MAD-OPO.

Could be tough trying to work them all out...in the past few years I've managed the following, all on BA.

LGW-AMS-LGW
LGW-JER-LGW
LHR-BCN-LHR
LHR-TXL-LHR
SOU-EDI-SOU
LHR-BCN-AGP-BCN-LHR (legs between BCN and AGP on IB)

A friend does multiple day trips over weekends, one his more crazy ones over a long weekend.
Thu: LHR-BCN-AGP-BCN-LHR
Fri: LHR-BCN-AGP-LHR
Sat: LHR-JFK-LHR (arrives early on Sunday)
Sun: LGW-JER-LGW

A bit too hardcore and obssessive for me, one per month was my target for day trips!

LBA-BFS-LBA with JET2
LBA-AGP-LBA with JET2
LBA-DUB-LBA with Ryanair
LBA-AMS-LTN-AMS-LBA with JET2/Easyjet

Gotta love those low cost fares!

Just booked another '4 in a day' trip.

LBA-BHD with FlyBE - Should be my first time on a Dash 8!
BHD-MAN with BA - Should be my second time on the Dash 8!
MAN-LHR with BA
LHR-LBA with BMI

All for £104!

A quick question for those of you who've done day trips from the UK to the US... Have you ever had any problems with immigration? Have they ever been suspicious of the reasons you're only there for a few hours?

Delta: ATL-BOS on MD-80
Delta Connection (Comair): BOS-Portland, Maine on CRJ-200
Delta Connection (ASA): Portland-ATL on CRJ-700

The CRJ-200 sector included a landing with one engine because the aircraft wasn't fueled properly...now that was fun!

Done a few myself;

PLH-BRS-PLH.... Bored and wanted to fly on Air Southwest's Dash 8.
PLH-BRS-DUB-BRS-PLH.... Wanted to fly a Ryanair B732.
BHX-DUB-BHX.... Good suggestion by Ben (ex British767) lol!

Also a done few extravagant one way routings instead of flying direct;

BHX-DUB-SNN-LPL-BCN.
BHX-AMS-BCN-MAH
BHX-DUB-BRS-PLH

All for the fun of flying:D But I think if you can try and spend some time in the city you visit, otherwise you'll be missing out.
