All depends on how you look at it...

If you own two airplanes and one crashes, you have lost 50% of your fleet.
Some would argue thats alot.

If you own 10 planes and one crashes, you lose only 10% of your fleet.
Some would say thats low.

The ratio is kind of important because not all airlines are the same size.


Just my thought on the subject.

I think the title is a bit misleading - we all have different perceptions of danger. for example, have you ever bought food on an FR flight - now thats dangerous.........

Back to the question - without and statistics or facts infront of me,
I would think that the following airlines would be on the list for passengers lost- however I could be way off the mark and corrected.

- Pan Am
- Korean
- AA

As I said in my earlier thread, the title of the topic is misleading - "MOST DANGEROUS AIRLINE".
You will note I did not call AA most dangerous!

I don't have any numbers handy, but AA has had their share of misfortune along with the lesser know carriers. CFIT has gotten several in the last decade including AA at Cali. Crew fatigue mixed with weather, AA at LIT. AF at Toronto? Remains to be seen. And now to start the flames, no other airline has broken the tail off an A300. Training issue? Maintenance? Wasn't the machine.

"Most dangerous" or "least safe"? Flying is the safest mode of transportation we have. Unfortunately "we" and "it" are imperfect.

I do not have figures for total aircraft in operation, but it seems to be 6 Lancastrian, 12 York and a handfull of Tudors/Anson's.

Not the greatest number of fatalities, but still pretty scary.

AA... Just because they are the largest does not constitute that statement. Also they were not the largest until they got TWA. Therefore there are a handful of airlines that go before them. Between 1953 and 2004 AA has only had (15) accidents that were fatal. Also the FAA classes a fatal accident as a result of a/c failure or weather, not hyjackings therefore all the 9/11 accidents for AA were not included.

The old Aeroflot and dangerous equation has been trotted out again by people who should know better yet don't. The poster also asked a difficult question as some have pointed out. Can the Aeroflot of today be compared with the Aeroflot of 1953 or even 1991? Undoubetdly no, although is shares the same name and historical heritage. The CI question is also similar.

For current operational airlines that are actively dangerous to fly on, rather than in some abstract historical way, it is probably somewhere in Africa, most likely in Nigeria. For an airline in a developed country that is dangerous there are examples such as the ongoing wilfull shoddy maintenance at Alaska, the various cover-ups by Air France, the AA tail-falling-off and nothing heard about it again accident of a few years ago, the questionable maintenance at Chalk's Ocean Airways, the recent revelations of poor maintenance and people passing out in row 17 at SAS, and the list goes on. While this may not qualify them as dangerous it does give one pause. As an aviation enthusiast, other than to annoy other enthusiasts because you are bored and need attention, why would someone ask such an open-ended question?

Yes for the longest time they were you are correct on that. Since why I listed there accidents. Today it is AA though being the largest carrier in the world.

Though you need to remember the airline industry then was a very very different beast to that of today's.
Air safety was far poorer than today with more fatalities across far fewer flights.

BSAA incidentally weren't closed down, but were merged into what became BOAC.

I heard that JAL may cut down the routes or may stop flying to some destination because JAL said that Safety is not priority. Yesterday, JAL has cancelled so many flights...that's odd. I couldnt find the reason why they cancelled them.

I read that Air Canada is the safest airline with a 1 in a few million chance of being killed and that an airline called "Air Georgia" based in Europe, if I recall, you have a 1 in 10 chance of being killed. This study was done about a year ago.

We are fortunate that in developed countries we don't have to worry about airline safety, but I do have to say that the only airline I am not too sure about here in the U.S is Alaska Airlines. They've had numerous maintenance issues and accidents and not to mention the last major airline fatal accident was the Alaska MD80 that fell from the sky and killed all aboard because a metal part in the tail broke because it was too old for use.
