LAX Or SFO To Austin, Texas?

If I was flying from AKL with a view to ending up in Austin, Texas, would it be best to fly to LAX or SFO? Which route and which carriers for the domestic leg would be the best deal?

I'm trying to do it on a budget so I'm not too fussed about prettiest FA's, A vs B, good food, low-socio-economic pax or any brand loyalty, I just want to get there cheap as poss, I don't mind weird times of day or night for flight times as I'll be in bits after the 12 hour haul from NZ.

If season is a factor, let's say late next summer.

Only carriers flying LAX-Austin are American and Southwest, while United is the sole carrier flying SFO-AUS nonstop.

I suppose one determining factor might be which frequent flyer program are you member of and would accrue miles in.

Here's my guess...SFO fares high. LAX fares low. I can get real fare quotes once I reach my office. Southwest does not offer flights beyond June right now (assuming you mean our summer here in North America).

If you fly Air New Zealand to SFO, you'll get ride in their new 777. Then you can take pics. and tell us all about it!

As Air New Zealand and UAL are Star Members', you'll be able to earn FFM on both legs. Not only that, I might get killed for this, I think SFO has a nicer International Terminal.

It will be a little more costly and you'll fly an RJ to AUS.

Aaron

Shouldn't be difficult!!

So UAL fly the RJ to AUS?

Living in Austin, I'd say go LAX. It's a little less out of the way, plus you have your choice of airlines (from a couple, rather than no choice whatsoever). Plus, given the option, I'd much rather fly mainline, either MD-80 or 737, versus an RJ (CRJ no?). In addition, I just generally prefer American to UA. You'll love Austin, if you haven't been here before, once you land in the airport, you'll get a great idea of the mood of the town, its not a generic, boring shops and restaurants airport that you find in many bigger airports, but most everything is local, restaurants and such.

Good Luck!

Cheers,
Cameron

Ya moron! LAX! Then I picks ya up and gets ya pissed and shows ya the better parts of So. Cal.

Possibly there is a flight to AUS on WN out of ONT (Ontario, Ca) which is 3 mi. from me. Room, board, beer, all on me so any additional airfare will be compensated.
Think about it Jafa.

UA1134 non-stop service from SFO-AUS is on a 737-300.

United moved LAX and SFO CRJ-700's to SAT to focus on the mini-hub.

Howdy from AUS!

I'd take QF to LAX, and hope on a n/s flight to AUS!

Let me know what you decide!

Drew.

Well it'll be NZ rather than QF but that's as far as we got, a few things need to happen before we start looking at firming up plans but thanks to you all for the advice and kind offers of help, can't wait!

Your taking NZ to either LAX or SFO...

which fare is cheaper, I'd assume LAX...

you fare from California will be cheaper on the LAX-AUS n/s versus the SFO-AUS n/s.

I'm thinking UA is the only carrier offering n/s service to AUS from SFO, and WN and AA compete for passengers on the LAX-AUS n/s route...

I'd go for AA, I'm on AA #1308 in May, LAX-AUS!

That will be the way to do it then. Thanks.
