If I was flying from AKL with a view to ending up in Austin, Texas, would it be best to fly to LAX or SFO? Which route and which carriers for the domestic leg would be the best deal?
I'm trying to do it on a budget so I'm not too fussed about prettiest FA's, A vs B, good food, low-socio-economic pax or any brand loyalty, I just want to get there cheap as poss, I don't mind weird times of day or night for flight times as I'll be in bits after the 12 hour haul from NZ.
If season is a factor, let's say late next summer.

Here's my guess...SFO fares high. LAX fares low. I can get real fare quotes once I reach my office. Southwest does not offer flights beyond June right now (assuming you mean our summer here in North America).

Living in Austin, I'd say go LAX. It's a little less out of the way, plus you have your choice of airlines (from a couple, rather than no choice whatsoever). Plus, given the option, I'd much rather fly mainline, either MD-80 or 737, versus an RJ (CRJ no?). In addition, I just generally prefer American to UA. You'll love Austin, if you haven't been here before, once you land in the airport, you'll get a great idea of the mood of the town, its not a generic, boring shops and restaurants airport that you find in many bigger airports, but most everything is local, restaurants and such.
Well it'll be NZ rather than QF but that's as far as we got, a few things need to happen before we start looking at firming up plans but thanks to you all for the advice and kind offers of help, can't wait!
