What Can I Expect On My Upcoming Delta Flights?

Hi Everyone,

I have not flown on Delta for over fifteen years and want to know what I can expect on my trip. I know that there will be no meals, and I know the aircraft types, but want to know what the check-in process is like, how they board, the comfort of their aircraft, their staff, the airports etc..

Here is the itinerary:

March 24, 2006

Well, if you let me know if you are flying F or Y, it would help. Here is what I can tell you anyway:
DL check-in online is the BEST option! If you are eligable, defintely check-in online! There is no elite/premium security line for F pax and medallion pax in MDW.
The only flight that seems to be pretty full as of right now, is the MDW-ATL flight.
No meals, they will offer you a choice from their snack basket and a drink - Pretty basic. The 738s and the CR7s are pretty new and, in my experience, clean. 738s have foot rests in F. There are CRT screens every 3 or 4 rows on the 738 too. No IFE on the CR7. will help you find the best seats, some will be saved for medallions though.
DL boards by zone. Your zone will be on your BP.
I have RARELY found an unhelpful and rude CS Rep at Delta.

Don't trust the aircraft type you booked. My dad booked our vacation on a 767 to LAX from SLC and when we got the airport it was a 757. Don't be disappointed if your plane is wrong! The good thing was we got to LAX on time. But our bags didn't. I thought the overall service was lousy.

99% of the time when I fly DL, the aircraft parked at the gate is exactly the same type of aircraft advertised. If anything, I'd say it's more likely to be upgraded to a bigger aircraft than the other way around.

With online reservations, online checkin, etc, I may not speak a word to a Delta employee prior to reaching cruise altitude, saying "Yes, ma'am" if offered a drink.

As previously said, try to check in online. If you don't have bags to check this way is the easiest as you can go straight to security. If you have bags to check then you'll still have to wait in the big line though. It has been a while since I have been to MDW but they didn't have kiosks two years ago. If they have fixed that it is a little easier to checkin at the terminal and have any bags checked.

Sevice onboard will be fine but nothing extravagant. You flights to ATL and back to MDW are on Barbie Jets so expect little headroom and having to scrunch your neck down to look out the window if you are anything over 5'5". The pitch and width of the seats is usually comparable to mainline but that damn ceiling is so low. Since the Barbie Jets are smaller you might get two drink runs through the plane during the flight.

When you get to ATL you'll be in the C Concourse that Delta Connection shares with AirTran. Make your way to the center of the concourse to catch the train to the other concourses where mainline runs out of which are T, A, B, D, and E. Most likely you will be in A or B for the flight to SRQ. A little shortcut if your SRQ flight is in the B Concourse...right about halfway down the C Concourse (I just don't remember the gate number) is an underground walkway over to B. IIRC it comes out around B26 or B29 but will save you time if yuou have to go over to one of the high numbered B gates. If your next gate is 1-18 they will be on the far side of the concourse so just go to the middle and take the train or is if is just 1 concourse away just walk it through the tunnel.

Your flight to SRQ will get you a drink service and a snack (chips, granola bars, peanuts, crackers) from the basket. If you drop by Radio Shack and get your own airline adapter you can use your own headset for the entertainment. Delta Horizons which is usually cheesy followed by an episode of Friends, Joey, Everybody Loves Raymond, or some other sitcom. By then you'll be landing so they'll flip it off. Since you have no Medallion status (do you have NW or CO status?) you'll get stuck with a less than stellar zone for boarding. The higher the number the better though. First Class and bulkhead in Zone 1. Medallions in Zone 2 & 3. Then everyone else in Zones 4-9. If you have NW/CO status make sure you have that number attached to your tickets and then you can board with the Medallions otherwise enjoy the huddled masses of Steerage.

DL does one thing that I would assume the rest of the majors do as well. If you aren't a Medallion level flier you stand a good chance of getting a middle seat or gate assigned seat. It sucks but they do take care of their own before the casual flier. If you don't already have a seat assignment just be as friendly as possible and ask politely upon check-in or at the gate.

I think you'll find DL pleasant but nothing fancy compared to any of the other majors. If you go in expecting standard service with a smile you'll be happy. If you go in expecting royal treatment in Steerage you'll be disappointed. I fly DL pretty much exclusively and they have always taken good care of me and provided service with a smile. Enjoy your trip and have a good time is the Sunshine State.
