Air Canada Transatlantic?

Have just used my US Airways Dividend miles to book a return flight to Vancouver...

Unfortunately the Star Alliance carriers only have limited seat availability on flights from the UK to Vancouver and even considered flying to Seattle and transfering by ground to Vancouver. I gave them as much flexibilty just stating I want a five day break in the first weeks in April.

I really wanted to try out SAS and fly LHR/BHX/MAN-CPH-SEA, as like the look of their long haul product but nothing available, US Airways had no availability LGW/MAN-PHL-SEA and then resorted to asking about trying British Midland MAN-ORD-YVR again nothing.

The US Airways reservation staff was excellent and after about 20 minutes on the phone and checking the whole UK availability the only flights available were:

Outbound
Carrier: Air Canada
Date: 4 April 2006
Depart: LHR - 0830
Arrive: YYZ - 1130
Connecting
Depart: YYZ - 1300
Arrive: YVR - 1457

Return
Carrier: Air Canada
Date: 8 April 2006
Depart: YVR - 2315
Arrive: YYZ - 0645 (Arrive Next Day)
Connecting
Depart: YYZ - 0900
Arrive: YVR - 2115

What can I expect from Air Canada service wise on both their international and trans-contnental flights.

Do they offer good inflight entertainment, for example AVOD or PTV's?

I understand most their long haul fleet are flying antiques (767's) and had little or no upgrades and below par with many other carriers crossing the pond. Is this true?

What aircrafts can I expect on these routes?

I am naturally dissappointed that I can't get my chosen carrier to Vancouver and will not allow it to ruin a trip to such a city.

I live in Vancouver and Fly out of Seattle all the time. Its A nice 2.5 hour drive. I use these guys www.quickcoach.com.

I know that 9am flight to LHR is a 763 but are the others also that or are they on 333's. Because the 333 is the best AC has on the transatlantic. I know that the LHR-YVR is on a 333 and the times are as follows.

AC854

Vancouver (YVR) - London (LHR)
17:55 11:35 +1 day 333

AC855
London (LHR) - Vancouver (YVR)
12:30 -14:25 333

You could also go through YYC which is also a 333 and it will be a 320 series to YVR.

There is no PTV's on the 767's. AVOD systems with new seats will be installed starting May of this year. Seat pitch on AC is superior to that of BA and LH across the pond at 32"-34" depending on which paticular 767 you're on. If you get an A330 or A340 you'll have 34" pitch in economy.

Just an FYI, once AC has the interior upgrades complete it will be the best product trans-atlantic hands down. Seat pitch in ecomonoy will 34" across the fleet and the touchscreen AVOD system (already in use on the E190's) is really slick. Not to mention the new lie flat seats for J class.

If you give me flight numbers I can find out what equipment is operating those flights.

You arent missing anything with the SK transatlantic product- believe me. I put up my experience in November SEA-CPH in the trip reports thread.

you should have a pretty good flight!! but dont expect grade A service!!! Air Canada often over books their flights and leaves you stranded! When Travelling Air Canada be sure to get to the airport EXTRA early to ensure that you dont loose your place on the aircraft.. I know this from experiance.. happened to me two times already that I was bumped off the airplane due to over-booking!

April this year ??? I'm impressed - you were lucky to get anything at such short notice - I never seem to have any luck getting what I want longhaul unless I book it 6 or 8 months out  Sad

Thanks for the info on Air Canada, but there has been a change!!!

Had a phone call from US Airways today advising that Air Canada were unable to honour my booking and they have cancelled my booking. I am as expected extremely dissapointed!

I was on the phone to US Airways for over an hour and they were searching the system down for any alternatives and could not find a thing. I explained I could even travel next week to add further flexiability.

After some time they offered me the most stupid routing possible but would mean I would get a round the world trip for 50,000 dividend miles! It was however to Seattle and would mean ground transportation toVancouver, to make the journey even longer.

27th March
All Nippon Airways 202 - DEP London 19.35 - ARR Tokyo 15.10 (28th March)
United Airlines 876 - DEP Tokyo 17.25 (28th March) - ARR Seattle 09.03 (28th March)

4th Apr
United Airlines 762 - DEP Seattle 15.25 - ARR San Francisco 17.27
United Airlines 954 - DEP San Francisco 19.12 - ARR London 13.30 (5th April).

Even though I love flying, there is no way I feel I could endure such a route for only a week, and would spend most the week in Vancouver in bed suffering Jet Lag.

Looks like I will be going May time now!

I flew Air Canada a few years back EWR-YYZ-FCO and FCO-YUL-EWR, on their 767-300 across the pond both ways. It was the most comfortable transatlantic product I've ever experienced. While it didn't have PTV or AVOD, it did have an acceptable IFE, but moreover, it was comfortable enough I actually slept most of my flight. Having done PHL-CDG on US Airways' 767 before, I'll tell you AC is vastly superior... both in comfort and service. I was so impressed with AC, I was even going to take them on a trip to Australia I was planning but later found out wasn't going to happen (the plan was MSP-YVR-HNL-SYD - HNL being a tech stop for the 763).

My last fall experience with AC's A333 on the route was positive. Comfortable seat pitch, excellent cabin service, above average food and wine selection.

AC's both ways on time performance will definitely keep me away from BA's entertainment system for now  Wink

At the moment non-stop direct airfares are not cheap and that despite BA's summer frequency increase on the route.

Funny to see LHR to YVR via Japan decent priced offers though  no
