Me personally I love evening flights. Not necessarily dark during takeoff but the one's where the sun is setting mid flight ! I've been fortunate enough to have had a couple of those, one in particular was a 6:35pm flight out of LGA to MCO we arrived a little after 9pm. I always have my window seat, and I was able to catch the perfect view of the sunset !

I went home about once a month last semester, and since my first Monday class wasn't until 3:15 PM, I always wound up on Monday morning 7AM flights, which were a real pain. I didn't mind getting up because I'd be excited to go flying and stuff, but by the time my 3:15 class rolled around I would be totally shot. Now I try to get evening flights when I fly, but usually not super late flights (I don't sleep well on planes and it is annoying (but no one's fault) when everyone else is asleep and I don't want to. I wind up just sitting there listening to my iPod until the battery dies. So my favorite flights are early evening flights.

I love early morning flights during the winter; when I go back up to Uni after a weekend at home I catch the 06:30 PLH-BRS flight and then get a train to Birmingham - its great to soar up over the cloudes and see the sun rising over England. Evening flights are also very nice, can get some wonderful colors in the sky which provide great photo oppotunities!
This was one of the best flights; LHR-BCN, its a shame that my PC crashed and I lost all the pictures bar this one that I uploaded;

I would rather have a departure for most domestic flights or east to west Euro-USA flights is late morning to early afternoon avoiding the rush hours. That way too, I don't have to wake up at 4 am to make the departure in the early am or if a bit later, but still before dark at my place of arrival. I do like flights when there is a clear sky anytime. Near sunset at the right place can be awesome, like on the 'river route' going to LGA. Or at the edge of sunrise on an overnight flight like my 2003 trip on BA (777) EWR-LHR, and seeing the southern coast of Ireland out the starboard side windows.
