Hey,

Just wondering what airline you guys think will be the next to start services to NZ and which airline will be the next to pull out of NZ?
My picks would be Garuda Indonesia to pull out and maybe a european carrier to come in, maybe BA/VS??

Colin

Many are saying that MH might pull the plug on AKL (hoping that they won't). I would say that AC would be the next carrier to AKL if NZ decides not to pursue YVR. Probably in the next 2 years

No! I certainly hope not. What happened to all of these rumours that MH loads on the AKL flights were really good? Yesterday at the airport, there seemed to be a pretty full flight to Kuala Lumpur judging by the check in queues.

I think NZ will start/pursue this route, therefore AC not starting this route, however I have heard rumours of a JSA between the carriers could be on the agenda (NZ fly the route with their planes 2x per week and AC the same.)

Anyone else have any other ideas on any other airlines?

In regards to MH their loads are good, particularly in the NZ summer but high loads don't mean good yeilds, it depends if the front cabins are full.

As for them pulling out, personally I think its unlikely but you never no, i'm a spotter and hate to see any airline leave. I don't no that GA will leave, funny though I was thinking about that today, their loads aren't always great and they do offer only 2 flights a week, but noone else flies DPS-AKL so I think they will stay as they are. TG were rumoured to be reducing flights but aren't going to, they do need a different aircraft though for AKL, one with more Y class seating and less J.

New airlines well AC have been mentioned as have AI via Australia probably SYD, wouldn't last I don't think and a return from CI from TPE non stop, is the market there for both BR and CI? I think not myself being that they don't offer the best connections to Europe so are relying solely on TPE-AKL traffic pretty much and BR's loads at times are shocking. I'm still hopeful that UA will return oneday. I guess Jetstar will end up in AKL eventually.

Quite possible that AI might start flying to New Zealand once they get their 787's....should be enough traffic to sustain a 3x weekly flight via SIN or KUL...

well NZ will commance serivces to Vancover , in 2007, this is nothing new, I also heard of AI thinking about flying to AKL, but the draft route map thats been playing with at work is quite nice, tho nothing is set in stone yet, expect another 2 routes from NZ , next couple of weeks,

CZ 787 to AKL can't wait.

Any thought of a Chinese airline starting scheduled flights here? Maybe not next, but China Southern could try and tap passengers who are going to China and bypass HKG. And if Ethiad gets a non-stop to Australia, they could possibly do an Emirates.

It's all about the destination AND the journey.

Yes I forgot about the Chinese carriers, MU ran charters to AKL in late 2003 early 2004 and the loads seemed to be good with 2 weekly A343's. There was even talk about it becoming scheduled at one stage.

CA did run 2 weekly 744's to AKL via SYD in 2000/01, never going to work via OZ though especially at such a low frequency. And China Southwest ran a weekly charter flight in 1999 which was meant to increase but was dropped instead after just 4 flights.

However the market is certainly there for NZ plus probably 1 Chinese operator to run non stops AKL-PVG!

they already did , didn't they ?

down from
7 x AKL-SYD-BKK 744
3 x AKL-BNE-BKK M11

to 7 x AKL-BKK A346

or were they talking about a further reduction ?

They were rumoured to be reducing more, back to 4-5 a week, but they are still loaded as daily! The 346 has a large J class of 60 seats which for AKL is to many, I wouldn't be surprised if they put a new 772ER on the route when they get them. Though I hope not because they are the only airline flying the A346 to AKL! Looks like i'll be flying them to BKK in November, looking foward to the A346!

This flight also used 744's and at the end used 2 class 773's!

We got several new airlines and routes at the start of this decade, CA, CI and OZ all came and went within a short time. TN, BI, DJ and EK are still here though! UA were the only long term servant that pulled out over 3 years ago now, man how time flies!

SQ, CX, QF and NZ have all increased flights quite a bit in the last few years though CX are currently back to 1 daily. KE ran double dailies 1 year in summer both with 744's! Here's hoping to see some increases again soon!

I saw there quarterly report and they did have it listed as a possible route from YVR

Now that NZ will shortly be offering daily B744 services to HKG and beyond, will CX maintain their existing schedule? Could they be the next to depart AKL?

I guess anything can happen , but I would be very surprised ... I think that they will just keep it at daily rather than having the 12 flights per week they used to have - HKG is a great hub and CX can offer a lot of onward connections so I dont see them pulling out ... but as I said , I guess anything can happen

Considering that NZ will offer less seats AKL-HKG because the balance will be going to LHR. This is very unlikely, CX are one of the established carriers at AKL and won't give in to a bit of competition.

Like you said anything can happen but as i said above CX are established at AKL and won't just pull out because NZ are using a larger plane to HKG. They should be back to 12 weekly in the summer if they still have avaliable aircraft!
