First of all, I appreciate this thread. This is a good idea but I was disappointed over the choices and how they are drawn together. I don't think it was all fair. But hey, I'll get to that later.
Not many of the above are very interesting for several reasons.. IMO. I like all the planes mentioned, except for the DC-10 which is such an L-1011 wannabe The MD11 is so much nicer.
The DC-10 was never as cool as the L-1011 IMO, no favorite of mine and the 744 never as cool as the 741/742. Those were groundbreakers, the 744 a derivative. So no, nothing interesting there. No votes.
EMB-145 is a is a cool looking thing, but never going to be my favorite. The ERJ-170 and ERJ-190, now they are damn cool. The T7 is a fine plane.. but lacks any characteristic. It is so well designed but boring looking. How shall I put it? It's like that girl in class who always gets A's but doesn't have time to work out or look sexy. Can't say either is a favorite of mine.
MD-11 eh? Didn't we already discuss the DC-10? Same thing, just a derivative. Not as good looking as the L-1011, but a far better plane than the DC-10 and with better proportions that its older sibling.
Now the Concorde is a good looker and super-sonic. I guess I would vote for it, but it will win anyway. As Amy insinuated: boring (because it is so predictable). The Concorde always attracted attention though where ever it went, so it deserves to win I suppose.
B757, yes. Now we're talking. This is a really cool plane, way cooler IMO than the 737 classics. Power, sleekness and a distinct look. This bird has a lot to it. I like it a lot and it is certainly one of my top 5 favorite planes. The 737 classics are just that. Classics. Nothing overly exciting.
Okay, I admit I am a bit annoyed over how this poll is conducted. EMB-145 vs B744? Come on. Match compatible planes to begin with. Widebodies with widebodies, narrowbodies with narrowbodies etc. Starting with the DC-10 vs. MD-11 and if you want derivatives then B741 vs B742 etc.
Here is how I would have set up the competition (note I haven't had the time to find matches for everyone, this is just an idea to show what I'm thinking):
B747 vs A380
L-1011 Tristar vs DC10/MD11
A300 vs A310
A330 vs A340
B767 vs B777
(plus one more fight)
Narrowbodies (more examples):
B707 vs DC8
DC9/MD80s vs B727
B757 vs Tu-204
(plus two more fights)
Saab 2000 vs Fokker 50
DHC Dash 8 vs ATR-42
(plus four more fights)
DC6 vs Lockheed Constellation
Concorde vs Tu-144
(plus four more fights)
..and so on. Make the categories equal in size - I suggest twelve types (six fights) in first round in each category and in the end you'll have four winners in each category and then they can fight for a final. I'd suggest tuboprops vs classics and widebodies vs narrowbodies and then the two winners who ever they are fight for the all time favorite.
Ahm, so yeah.. I'd vote for the B757 and the Concorde. The others don't provoke much fascination with me, I guess.
